It is the version I own and all the pictures in this review show it.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0The second version was introduced in 1970, it has a focusing ring of the hill\/valley type but otherwise it is very similar to the first version.<\/li>\n<li>The third version was introduced in 1973 and it has a rubberized focusing ring and weigths 20g more than it&#8217;s two precedessors. The optical design and short focusing distance of 1.2m are the same.\u00a0Minolta also dropped the &#8220;-PF&#8221; from the name during the production run for this version.<\/li>\n<li>The fourth version introduced in 1976 has a different (but similar) optical design (5 lenses in 5 groups). It is also a bit shorter, thinner and lighter than it&#8217;s precedessor. The easiest way to tell it apart from the others is the short focusing distance of just 1m.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Data according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/minolta.eazypix.de\/lenses\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minolta manual lenses list<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are also two\u00a0version called <strong><em>Minolta MD Rokkor 100mm 1:2.5<\/em> <\/strong>which are the same optically as the fourth MC version. For a short time I owned one, the performance was very similar to my first MC version but I preferred the focusing ring of the MC so I sold it.<\/p>\n<p>Then there is the <strong>Minolta <em>MD 100mm 1:2.5<\/em><\/strong> which has a 49mm filter diameter and a little modified optical design. At 310g it is significantly lighter than all the other versions. Built quality will be similar to that of my <a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/minolta-md-50mm-2-review\/\">MD 2\/50<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1><b>Compatibility<a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Objektive-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-413\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Objektive-5-236x300.jpg\" alt=\"Objektive-5\" width=\"236\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Objektive-5-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Objektive-5.jpg 504w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><\/a><\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can use the lens on a wide range of old <strong>Minolta SR film-cameras<\/strong> like the Minolta XD-7 or X-700.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the flange-focal-distance of Minolta SR lenses all adapters for<strong> DSLR cameras<\/strong> either contain an optical element which will reduce image quality a lot or you lose infinity focus.<strong> I wouldn&#8217;t bother to use one of those adapters<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Mirrorless cameras<\/strong> have a much shorter flange focal distance and \u00a0you can buy adapters for Fuji-X, Sony-E, Micro Fourthirds and Samsung NX which <strong>work very well<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I usually recommend <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/manual-lenses-sony-a7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sony Alpha 7<\/a><\/strong> cameras for the use with older manual lenses because they are the only ones with a<strong> fullframe sensor<\/strong> and in my experience most lenses work best on the larger sensor. Everything is made from metal and even though my lens is more than 45 years old and I use it regularly it shows less signs of wear than my <a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/sony-fe-28mm-2-what-we-know-so-far\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sony FE 2\/28<\/a> which I bought 6 months ago.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> focusing ring is super smooth<\/strong> with just the right amount of resistance.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Size, Weight and Handling<\/strong><\/h1>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1039\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1039\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC06961.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1039\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC06961.jpg\" alt=\"Minolta MC 2.5\/100\" width=\"800\" height=\"587\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC06961.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/DSC06961-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1039\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Minolta MC 2.5\/100<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The lens feels <strong>well balanced<\/strong> on my rather light <strong>Alpha 7<\/strong>, on my small <strong>Nex-5n<\/strong> it is <strong>a bit front heavy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The focusing ring travels about 90\u00b0 from 1.2m to 2m and a further 110\u00b0 to infinty. This <strong>focus throw is just right for porttraits<\/strong> and also landscape images. This is one reason why I prefer it for portraits over my <a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/tokina-x-macro-90mm-12-5-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tokina 2.5\/90 Macro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The short <strong>focusing distance of 1.2m is a bit high<\/strong> in my opinion.<br \/>\nThe <strong>Minolta Closeup Lens No. 0<\/strong> works well with the MC 2.5\/100 and reduces the short focusing distance to\u00a067cm but you can&#8217;t focus past 1.2m when it is attached. There is no \u00a0stop between f\/2.5 and f\/4, then it stops down half steps to f\/22.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> filter thread\u00a0does not rotate<\/strong> when the lens is focused which makes the usage of \u00a0polarizers easier. It is quite long and made from metal. I use \u00a0one for the MD 4.5\/75-200 instead which is a bit smaller and works well enough.<\/p>\n<h1>Optical Performance<\/h1>\n<h3>Flare Resistance<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Not a strength<\/strong> of the MC 2.5\/100. It easily <strong>loses contrast<\/strong> when a bright light shines on the front of the lens.<\/p>\n<h3>Distortion<\/h3>\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a title=\"Minolta MC 2.5\/100 | f\/8 | Distortion and CA test\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96189377@N08\/20457592382\/in\/dateposted\/\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/545\/20457592382_de4a52509e_c.jpg\" alt=\"Minolta MC 2.5\/100 | f\/8 | Distortion and CA test\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">a7 | f\/8 | \u00a0 LR default settings, no CA correction<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A <strong>very small amount of pincushion distortion<\/strong>, only relevant for the most critical applications.<\/p>\n<h3>Vignetting<\/h3>\n<p>There is <strong>minor vignetting at f\/2.5<\/strong> which is <strong>gone by f\/4.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Chromatic Aberations<\/h3>\n<p>LoCA and LaCA are both visible in critical situation but not too obtrusive.<\/p>\n<h3>Bokeh<\/h3>\n<p>The lens has <strong>beautifully smooth bokeh<\/strong>. I would go as far as to say that it has<strong> the most beautiful \u00a0bokeh of any Minolta lens I have ever used<\/strong>. I think the lens performs a bit better at medium distances of 3-4m.<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">f\/4: <strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong>The <strong>center improves noticeably<\/strong> to very good levels, the midframe area is good to very good and the corners improve only a little.<\/li>\n<li><strong>f\/5.6, f\/8:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Very sharp across the frame<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">f\/11:\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">A little softer due to diffraction.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Minolta MC Tele-Rokkor PF 100mm 1:2.5<strong> does not set any resolution record<\/strong> but it is <strong>sharp enough at f\/2.5<\/strong> with very good resolution and some spherical aberration.<br \/>\nBy\u00a0f\/5.6 it leaves little to be desired.<\/p>\n<h1><b>Compared to other lenses<\/b><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Tokina 2.5\/90 Macro: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a \u00a0sharper\u00a0at f\/2.5 and it is more flexible because of the much shorter minimal focusing distance. So usually it make sense for me to carry the additional 100g. But the Tokina has a rather short focusing throw at portrait distances, inferior bokeh and it is much more expensive nowadays.
