{"id":10676,"date":"2017-12-01T16:29:44","date_gmt":"2017-12-01T15:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/?p=10676"},"modified":"2017-12-02T08:41:47","modified_gmt":"2017-12-02T07:41:47","slug":"manual-photographers-series-part-8-bob-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/manual-photographers-series-part-8-bob-israel\/","title":{"rendered":"The Manual Photographers Series Part 8: Bob Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>P: Hi Bob, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to use manual lenses?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B:\u00a0<\/strong>I\u2019m originally from New York City but oddly enough, I\u2019ve never really photographed there.\u00a0 I live in the suburbs of Minneapolis, MN and work downtown.\u00a0 Hence, you can usually find me photographing\u00a0 both natural and urban landscapes.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been photographing since the mid-80s but it was a fledgling interest initially.\u00a0 While I have a Ph.D. in organic chemistry, the darkroom was never all that interesting to me.\u00a0 My obsessions with photography took off when digital cameras took off as well.\u00a0 \u00a0Maybe it was the instant feedback but the digital darkroom resonated with me.\u00a0 \u00a0I started with a Nikon 880 but quickly transitioned to Canon with the Canon 10D. \u00a0Then came the 20D, 30D and 5D.\u00a0 About this time, I really started getting into Canon L glass.\u00a0 In 2003, I joined FredMiranda.com.\u00a0 I learned more about photography by reading and looking at images on that site, than any other.\u00a0 It was there I was introduced to the Alternative Forum.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11187\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11187\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11187\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC08475-Edit-Edit-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC08475-Edit-Edit-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC08475-Edit-Edit-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC08475-Edit-Edit-2-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11187\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Voigtlander Heliar 15mm f\/4.5 III @ f\/8, 1\/15 sec, ISO 100<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>That led to my first manual focus and (still) favorite Zeiss lens . . . the Zeiss Distagon 35\/2 ZE!\u00a0 My desire to try new and different lenses grew.\u00a0 I became fascinated with the rendering of Zeiss ZE glass and invested as I could.\u00a0 My collection grew to include the Zeiss Distagon 21\/2.8, 35\/2 and both 50 and 100mm Makro-Planars.\u00a0 By now I was shooting the 5D Mark II and a Canon 1D Mark 4.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11178\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11178\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11178\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC4802-Edit-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC4802-Edit-3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC4802-Edit-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/DSC4802-Edit-3-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11178\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Voigtlander 65mm APO-Lanthar @ f\/2.8 1\/80 sec, ISO 1600<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 2011, I was working and living in The Netherlands for a 6 month period.\u00a0 It was then that Sony announced the NEX 5, a mirrorless camera with the promise small lightweight cameras with small lenses and DSLR-like image quality.\u00a0 I was intrigued and purchased the camera in Europe. Then came the 5N, NEX-7 and finally the A7 series.\u00a0 With the A7 series, there were limited native options for lenses.\u00a0 But then adapters allowed for almost any lens to be used.\u00a0 Since I was such a fan of Zeiss, the Alt forum on FredMiranda.com became my obsession and I experimented with Zeiss, Voigtlander, Canon FD, Olympus, Minolta lenses and more.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been \u2018experimenting\u2019 ever since.\u00a0 I love trying different lenses from different eras and using their \u2018character\u2019 as an artistic tool.\u00a0 It\u2019s still that way today although bag and tell us a little about your gear?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B<\/strong>: I currently shoot the Sony A7rII and the A6500.\u00a0 I also have a A6000 converted to Infrared.\u00a0 The A7rII is my main camera as I mostly shoot natural and urban landscapes.\u00a0 The A6500 I use for shooting wildlife on the lake; mostly loons, eagles and blue herons.\u00a0 I\u2019m excited for the A7rIII (which primes.\u00a0 It\u2019s mix of Voigtlander and Zeiss and lately the former has been putting out some stellar lenses.\u00a0 At the 35mm focal length, I have a hard time deciding on the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-zeiss-zm-35mm-1-4-t-distagon\/\">Zeiss Distagon 35\/1.4<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/voigtlander-ultron-11-7-35-mm-review\/\">Voigtlander Ultron 35\/1.7<\/a>.\u00a0 With both, I use the PCX5000 front filter which i<a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/rangefinder-wide-angle-lenses-on-a7-cameras-problems-and-solutions\/\">mproves the performance of both lenses on Sony mirrorless cameras<\/a>.\u00a0 Currently matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B<\/strong>: I have always gone back and forth between natural and urban landscapes.\u00a0 And I approach each somewhat differently.\u00a0 For natural landscapes, I tend to focus around sunrise\/sunset including predawn\/post dusk blue hour.\u00a0 I love the Sony Smooth Reflection app for cloud and water movement and I\u2019m concerned that it won\u2019t be available in the A7rIII.<\/p>\n<p>For urban landscape shooting, it\u2019s more about architecture, city landscape, and the details on the street.\u00a0 I tend to shoot urban and street photography any time of day or night.\u00a0 I travel quite extensively for my \u2018day job\u2019 so I\u2019m also a bit of a travel photographer.\u00a0 In the past, I had a photoblog called \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/mydailywanderings.blogspot.de\/\">My Daily Wanderings<\/a>\u2019 since I always have a camera where ever I go for work or play.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11166\" inspired you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/portfolios.williamneill.com\/index\">William Neill<\/a> \u2013 I was fortunate enough to spend a couple of days with Bill one on one in Yosemite.\u00a0 His work always inspired me but to get to spend some time together was an incredible learning experience.\u00a0 Besides, he is such a nice guy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jaymaisel.com\/\">Jay Maisel<\/a> \u2013 I became a fan of Jay Maisel\u2019s work when I moved from the suburbs to the city many years ago.\u00a0 Then I saw the interview he did a lens?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B<\/strong>: I like lenses that have a bit of character.\u00a0 While I like sharpness, there are other qualities sometimes more important such as color separation, sunstars, flare resistance.\u00a0 I love shooting into the sun!\u00a0 I\u2019m not a pixel peeper and I don\u2019t always care if a lens is sharp to the corners.\u00a0 I do want a lens that is sharp enough that the image looks crisp but without looking sterile.\u00a0 For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/sony-fe-1-855-za-sonnar-t-review\/\">Sony FE 55\/1.8<\/a> is a fantastic lens but to me is sometimes a bit lifeless.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/voigtlander-65-f2-apo-macro-review\/\">Voigtlander Macro APO-Lanthar 65\/2<\/a>, on the moment?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B<\/strong>: Most definitely it\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/voigtlander-65-f2-apo-macro-review\/\">Voigtlander Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm f\/2<\/a>. I love its colors, draw, sharpness, flare resistence and sunstars.\u00a0 Sunstars will appear even at f\/2.8 which I find amazing.\u00a0 It\u2019s a lens I\u2019m still exploring but so far it produces nothing but stunning images.\u00a0 Until this lens, I found myself shooting mostly at 35mm and wider for much of my photography, but now find this Voigtlander almost glued to my camera.\u00a0 As several authors here on Phillip Reeve <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/teams-favorite-lenses-october-2017-edition\/\">have stated<\/a>, it\u2019s a must get lens.<\/p>\n<figure Michigan in downtown Milwaukee.\u00a0 Since that time, an image of a lone cottage lit during dusk with a mountain backdrop (from a trip to Banff, Canada) stands out because I waited for 4 hours for River also stands out.\u00a0 It was taken from angle I had scoped out for some time from a highway bridge over the Mississippi River, requiring me to illegally pull off the side of the highway.\u00a0 Cars were zooming past and it was really cold and windy.\u00a0 I had to brace my tripod against the rail to get a steady shot.\u00a0 After several attempts, I was satisfied I was able to get a sharply focused image.\u00a0 I guess you can say my &#8216;best&#8217; pictures are the ones that have a story behind them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11167\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11167\" review?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>B<\/strong>: I can name two lenses.\u00a0 First is the Rokinon 14mm f\/2.4 SP.\u00a0 I bought this lens for astrophotography but have been way too busy these past months to put the lens through some testing.\u00a0 It seems to be very sharp with decent colors.\u00a0 It\u2019s surprising that you don\u2019t see or hear more about this lens.\u00a0 It is somewhat pricey for a Rokinon but I think this lens is far better the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-samyang-14mm-2-8\/\">Rokinon\/Samyang 14\/2.8<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The second lens is the Leica R Elmarit 28mm f\/2.8 (version II).\u00a0 This lens is built like a tank and has some the best color separation I\u2019ve ever seen.\u00a0 It\u2019s suitably sharp but I love it\u2019s Leica
