My copy is of this type.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Both versions are available with and without stop down lever.<\/p>\n<p>Minolta also made quite a few other 55mm lenses with f-stops of 1.8, 1.9 and 2 about which I can&#8217;t really tell you anything.<\/p>\n<p><em>Data according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/minolta.eazypix.de\/lenses\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minolta manual lenses list<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h1><b>Compatibility<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSC08195.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1092 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSC08195-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Minolta MC 1.7\/55 Sony a7\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSC08195-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSC08195.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can use the lens on a wide range of old <strong>Minolta SR film-cameras<\/strong> like the Minolta XD-7 or X-700.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the flange-focal-distance of Minolta SR lenses all adapters for<strong> DSLR cameras<\/strong> either contain an optical element which will reduce image quality a lot or you lose infinity focus.<strong> I wouldn&#8217;t bother to use one of those adapters<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Mirrorless cameras<\/strong> have a much shorter flange focal distance and \u00a0you can buy adapters for Fuji-X, Sony-E, Micro Four Thirds and Samsung NX which <strong>work very well<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I usually recommend <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/manual-lenses-sony-a7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sony Alpha 7<\/a><\/strong> cameras for the use with older manual lenses because they are the only ones with a<strong> fullframe sensor<\/strong> and in my experience most lenses work best on the larger sensor. It doesn&#8217;t get any better than this, the $1000 <a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/sony-fe-1-855-za-sonnar-t-review\/\">FE 1.8\/55<\/a> is not built as well.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1><strong>Size, Weight and Handling<\/strong><\/h1>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1094\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1094\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSC08207.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1094 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSC08207.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSC08207.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSC08207-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1094\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Minolta MC 1.7\/55 on my Sony Alpha 7<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The lens is small and light and so it feels very\u00a0<strong>well balanced<\/strong> on my rather light <strong>Alpha 7<\/strong>, as well as on my small <strong>Nex-5n<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The focusing ring travels about 80\u00b0 from 55cm to 1m and a further 45\u00b0 to infinity.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>focus throw is just right for\u00a0<\/strong><b>portraits<\/b>\u00a0and also landscape images.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>short<\/strong> <strong>focusing distance of 55 cm is a bit high, <\/strong>most normal lenses have a short focusing distance of 45 cm\u00a0but this is partially compensated by the longer focal length.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1091\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1091\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSC08194.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1091 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSC08194.jpg\" alt=\"Minolta MC 1.7\/55 Sony a7\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSC08194.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSC08194-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Minolta MC 1.7\/55 focused at infinity<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The metal made<strong> aperture \u00a0ring\u00a0<\/strong>of the has a <strong>perfect\u00a0resistance<\/strong> and distinctive stops.<\/p>\n<p>There is no \u00a0stop between f\/1.7 and f\/2.8 which is a bit annoying because it is a bit hard to set an aperture between both stops.<\/p>\n<p>From f\/2.8 it stops down half steps to f\/16. The<strong> filter thread\u00a0does not rotate<\/strong> when the lens is focused which makes the usage of \u00a0polarizers easier but the diameter of 52mm is quite\u00a0unusual for a Minolta lens, from about 1968 nearly all Minolta lenses had a standard 55m filter thread.<br \/>\nThe lens extends by about 6mm when focused to 1.2 meters.<\/p>\n<h1>Lens Hood<\/h1>\n<p>I don&#8217;t own the original lens hood, so I can&#8217;t provide you with a picture. It&#8217;s Minolta code name was\u00a0D52ND and it is 26mm deep. not\u00a0relevant for\u00a0any application.<\/p>\n<h3>Vignetting<\/h3>\n<p>There is\u00a0some<strong>\u00a0vignetting at f\/1.7 which is reduced a lot by f\/2.8 and gone by f\/4.<\/strong> This is much better than most f\/1.4 or f\/1.2 lenses which have a lot more vignetting at their fastest aperture.<\/p>\n<h3>Chromatic Aberations<\/h3>\n<p>Lateral CA are very very well corrected and barely visible.<\/p>\n<p>LoCA \u00a0are visible in critical situation but not too obtrusive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/DSC09281.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-954\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/DSC09281-1024x751.jpg\" alt=\"DSC09281\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">longer distance<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Stopped down to f\/2.8 the shape of the 6 aperture blades becomes a bit distracting but at least the blades are somewhat rounded.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7643\/16678818088_ca7c307254_c.jpg\" alt=\"Sony a7 | Minolta MC 1.7\/55 | f\/2.8\" width=\"800\" height=\"584\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But when you have a background with lower contrast the bokeh can be very smooth at f\/2.8:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7098\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/DSC00121.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"561\" but that&#8217;s the case for any classic normal lens I have used so far and I would rank the 1.7\/55 among the better normal lenses in this regard. The corners are soft with lots of coma. I don&#8217;t hesitate to use this aperture for portraits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/2.8<\/strong>: The center improves quite a bit to very good levels as does the midframe area which improves to good levels, the corners remain soft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/4: <\/strong>The lens is very sharp across most of the frame.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/5.6: <\/strong>Now even the corners are very good and only the far \u00a0corner is still soft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/8: <\/strong>Sharpness extends a little more, towards the far corners but there are still a few pixels which are a bit soft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/11<\/strong>: Very good across the whole frame with a small loss in the center.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>solid \u00a0performance<\/strong>, f\/1.7 is good enough for portraits with\u00a0less spherical aberration than Minoltas f\/1.4 or f\/1.2 lenses have at their fastest aperture but the f\/1.7 has less resolution.<br \/>\nStopped down to f\/8 the last few pixels in the corners aren&#8217;t very sharp, on most other normal lenses they are but this hardly matters as 99% of the image are very very sharp.<\/p>\n<h1><b>Compared to other lenses<\/b><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li>The<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/minolta-mc-rokkor-58mm-11-2\/\">Minolta MC 1.2\/58<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is much more expensive, much bigger and more than twice as heavy.\u00a0At f\/1.2 is has a lot more spherical aberration (lower contrast) than the 55 at f\/1.7 which reduces the sharpness impression but it actually has a higher resolution. At f\/2 and f\/2.8 it is a bit sharper, by f\/8 the difference is small. I think<strong> it is a steal for the $30-40 <\/strong>it usually sells for.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All in all the Minolta MC 1.7\/55 is what I would call a very good compromise.
