class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>There are many manual lenses above 28mm which work quite well on modern cameras like the Alpha 7 but not that many wide angle lenses perform good enough\u00a0on modern cameras.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Canon nFD 2.8\/24 <\/strong>is one of the sharpest, affordable wide angle lenses and I think it can be a good solution for budget-oriented Sony Alpha 7 users.<\/p>\n<p>A target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ebay.de <\/a>(affiliate link).<\/em><\/p>\n<h1>Versions<\/h1>\n<p>Canon made three different 2.8\/24\u00a0FD lenses.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The <strong>Canon FD 24mm 1:2.8\u00a0<\/strong>chrome nose was introduced in 1971 and is heavy at 410g. It has the less effective S.C. coating.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Canon FD 24mm 1:2.8\u00a0S.S.C. <\/strong>was introduced in 1973, it is very well build and a bit hefty at 330g.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0The\u00a0<strong>Canon <\/strong>(new)<strong> FD 24mm 1:2.8<\/strong>\u00a0introduced in 1979 has the new mounting system and it isn&#8217;t built as solid but at 240g it is notably lighter. This review is about this version.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The FD S.S.C. and new FD\u00a0\u00a0feature a floating focusing design but the nFD version has one more element.<\/p>\n<p>Canon also made a very big and very expensive FD 1.4\/24 L as well as an FD 2\/24 which is quite expensive too.<\/p>\n<h1><b>Compatibility<\/b><\/h1>\n<p>You can use the lens on a wide range of old <strong>Canon FD-mount\u00a0film-cameras<\/strong> like the Canon A1 or AE-1.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the flange focal distance of Canon FD\u00a0lenses, all adapters for<strong> DSLR cameras\u00a0<\/strong>either contain an optical element which will reduce image quality a lot or cause you to lose infinity focus.<strong> I wouldn\u2019t bother to use one of those adapters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mirrorless cameras<\/strong> have a much shorter flange focal distance and \u00a0you can buy adapters for Fuji-X, Sony-E, Micro Four Thirds and Samsung NX\u00a0which won&#8217;t degrade image quality or lose infinity focus.<\/p>\n<p>I usually recommend <a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/manual-lenses-sony-a7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sony Alpha 7<\/a>-series cameras for \u00a0use with older manual lenses because they are the only ones with a<strong> full frame sensor<\/strong> and in my experience most lenses work best on the larger sensor.\u00a0In my eyes there is little reason to use this lens on an APS-C camera; 18-55 Kit lenses will give better results.<\/p>\n<p>Here are links to adapters to\u00a0mount the<strong>\u00a0Canon FD\u00a02.8\/24 to Sony E-mount cameras<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1MwVFJj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon.com<\/a> | <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.de\/s\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1638&amp;creative=19454&amp;field-keywords=canon%20fd%20sony%20nex&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;site-redirect=de&amp;tag=phillipreeven-21&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon.de<\/a> (affiliate links).<br \/>\nI use an expensive <a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/novoflex-lens-adapter-nexcan-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Novoflex adapter<\/a> (link to my review) but the cheaper ones usually work well enough.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Build<\/strong><strong> Quality<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1387\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-2.jpg\" alt=\"Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-2\" width=\"791\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-2.jpg 791w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-2-297x300.jpg 297w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 791px) 100vw, 791px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Build quality is good by today&#8217;s standards but if you compare it to other manual lenses the lens feels a bit cheap.<\/p>\n<p>The lens is mostly metal but some parts like the aperture ring at the front plate are made from plastics. All the markings are engraved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Size, Weight and Handling<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1390\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-7.jpg\" alt=\"Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-7\" width=\"696\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-7.jpg 696w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-7-261x300.jpg 261w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Canon FD 2.8\/24 is a small lens and is very well balanced on my Sony Alpha 7.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>focusing ring<\/strong> travels 90 degrees from 0.3m\u00a0to 1m and a further 20 or so degrees to infinity. I think that&#8217;s a very reasonable focus throw. I would have wished for a little more resistance though; it is a bit too smooth.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>aperture ring\u00a0<\/strong>has half-stops from f\/2.8 to f\/22 but it requires too much force to move it and the clicks aren&#8217;t distinctive enough so it can be a bit hard to\u00a0select the right aperture stop just by feel.<\/p>\n<p>All in all operation works well enough but other lenses handle a bit more pleasant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1391\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-8.jpg\" alt=\"Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-8\" width=\"800\" height=\"636\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-8.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-8-300x239.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h1>Lens Hood<\/h1>\n<p>I don&#8217;t own the original lens hood, its name is &#8220;BW-52C&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h1>Close Focusing Distance<\/h1>\n<p>0.3m isn&#8217;t\u00a0very close for a 24mm lens. Thanks to floating elements sharpness doesn&#8217;t suffer as you focus closer.<\/p>\n<h1>Image Quality<\/h1>\n<h3>Vignetting<\/h3>\n<p>Notable at f\/2.8, greatly reduced by f\/4 and invisible in practical applications from f\/5.6.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8_vignetting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1417\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8_vignetting.jpg\" alt=\"Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8_vignetting\" width=\"750\" height=\"610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8_vignetting.jpg 750w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8_vignetting-300x244.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Flare Resistance<\/h3>\n<p>The flare resistance is actually quite good for a lens of its age. Stopped down to f\/8 it is <strong>very sharp across the frame.<\/strong>\u00a0Flare resistance is decent and the small size and low weight are a big bonus\u00a0for longer hikes.<\/p>\n<p>I wouldn&#8217;t recommend this lens for architecture photography because of the distortion. I also wouldn&#8217;t recommend it to people who put a lot of value on great build quality and a pleasant focusing ring.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All in all the Canon nFD 2.8\/24 is a good solution for photographers on a budget who are focused on the output of their lenses.
