Unfortunately the lens does not seem to optimized for the Sony filter stack, so how good a performer is this lens when used on a Sony camera? The lens does look a bit naked without it though, as can be seen from the picture above, but as it allows the use of rectangular filter systems I am glad it can be removed.<\/p>\n<h1>Vignetting<\/h1>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22645\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/vignetting_TTArtisan_35mm_1.4.jpg\" alt=\"ttartisan 7artisans 35mm 1.4 asph sharpness mirrorless spiegellos review coma astro milky way milchstra\u00dfe coma koma\" width=\"750\" height=\"610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/vignetting_TTArtisan_35mm_1.4.jpg 750w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/vignetting_TTArtisan_35mm_1.4-300x244.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Wide open there is strong light falloff of roughly 2.8 EV, stopped down to f\/2.0 this improves to 2.1 EV, stopped down to f\/2.8 it is 1.5 EV and pretty much stays at that value even if you stop down further. Unfortunately we can see here what happens if that is not the case: the center looks decent at f\/1.4, but midframe and corners don&#8217;t, as there is a lot of field curvature.<br \/>\nEven at f\/8.0 the corners are still not in the same focal plane as the center, so it is not a great idea to use the TTArtisan 35mm 1.4 for infinity landscape\/architecture shooting.<\/p>\n<h2>infinity <span id=\"infinity_42mp_Sony_A7rII\" tabindex=\"-1\">(24mp Leica M10)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23457\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Sharpness_TTArtisan_35mm_1.4_M10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1890\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Sharpness_TTArtisan_35mm_1.4_M10.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Sharpness_TTArtisan_35mm_1.4_M10-127x300.jpg 127w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Sharpness_TTArtisan_35mm_1.4_M10-542x1280.jpg 542w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Sharpness_TTArtisan_35mm_1.4_M10-768x1814.jpg 768w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Sharpness_TTArtisan_35mm_1.4_M10-650x1536.jpg 650w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When having a look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-ttartisan-21mm-1-5\/\">TTArtisan 21mm 1.5<\/a> we saw really significant differences when it comes to the infinity sharpness performance when the lens is used on a Leica M10 versus a Sony A7rII.<br \/>\nWith the TTArtisan 35mm 1.4 the differences are significantly smaller:<br \/>\nThe corners might actually look worse on the Leica at wider apertures while the midframe looks slightly better. Stopping down to f\/2.0 gets rid of most of the spherical aberration (&#8220;glow&#8221;) and the center performance steadily improves on stopping down further. So where does this TTArtisan 35mm 1.4 discussed here fit in?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Many of the cheaper and\/or smaller fast 35mm lenses have very busy bokeh with lots of outlining (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-slrmagic-35mm-1-2-cine\/\">SLRmagic 35mm 1.2 Cine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-7artisans-35-1-4\/\">7Artisans 35mm 1.4<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-voigtlander-35mm-1-4-nokton-e-classic\/\">Voigtlander 35mm 1.4 E Classic<\/a>). Some people love this busy bokeh, I find it distracting and avoid lenses like that.<br \/>\nThe TTArtisan is different though, at short to medium distances it renders mostly smooth bokeh with only very little outlining and it reminded me a lot of the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-zeiss-zm-35mm-1-4-t-distagon\/\">Zeiss ZM 35mm 1.4<\/a> in this regard.<br \/>\nUnfortunately it also shares the flaws of the aforementioned Zeiss lens: at longer focus distances the field curvature when used on a stock Sony camera is very significant and yields an often distracting and odd look (have a look at the bokeh section for samples).<br \/>\nThe field curvature is so strong, that it also hurts the performance stopped down for infinity shooting. I tried adding a <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/rangefinder-wide-angle-lenses-on-a7-cameras-problems-and-solutions\/\">5m PCX filter<\/a>, but the improvements were marginal and not worth the trouble.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately the infinity performance is not noticeably better when the lens is used on a Leica M10. <em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You can find the TTArtisan 35mm 1.4 from <a
