Around 2000 Nikon introduced the <strong>&#8220;G&#8221; suffix<\/strong>, which is not really the description of a feature but merely means that there is simply <strong>no aperture ring<\/strong> anymore. But until the introduction of the &#8220;E&#8221; suffix the aperture mechanism was still operated mechanically by a small lever in the camera and therefore it is <strong>possible to use<\/strong> these lenses <strong>with a completely&nbsp;mechanical adapter<\/strong>. Unfortunately there is quite a degree of variation when it comes down to the&nbsp;usability&nbsp;of these adapters, which is something I will talk about in the next paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>In case you want do adapt one of the newer <strong>&#8220;E&#8221; lenses<\/strong> with <strong>electronic aperture control<\/strong> (such as Canon uses on their EF(-S) lenses and Sony on there (F)E lenses) your only option right now is the <strong>Commlite CM-ENF-E1 AF-adapter<\/strong>, which can be preordered on <a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?icep_ff3=9&amp;pub=5575156171&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337820130&amp;customid=&amp;icep_uq=CM-ENF-E1&amp;icep_sellerId=&amp;icep_ex_kw=&amp;icep_sortBy=12&amp;icep_catId=625&amp;icep_minPrice=&amp;icep_maxPrice=&amp;ipn=psmain&amp;icep_vectorid=229466&amp;kwid=902099&amp;mtid=824&amp;kw=lg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ebay.com<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-decoration: none; border: 0; padding: 0; margin: 0;\" src=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/roverimp\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?ff3=9&amp;pub=5575156171&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337820130&amp;customid=&amp;uq=CM-ENF-E1&amp;mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]\" alt=\"\"> (affiliate link). I am currently using the <strong>Metabones<\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=httpphillinet-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00GBMI936\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\"> adapter (which I can <strong>recommend<\/strong>) and a Nikon-G to Leica-M adapter by <strong>Pixco<\/strong> (which I can <strong>not recommend<\/strong>, read on) in combination with the Voigtl\u00e4nder VM-E helicoid adapter and Jannik from our team is using the Novoflex adapter.<br \/>\n<em>* advertisement\/affiliate links<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2459\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2459\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2459 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/pixco_adapter_lever.jpg\" alt=\"Lever inside Pixco adapter\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/pixco_adapter_lever.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/pixco_adapter_lever-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/pixco_adapter_lever-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2459\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lever inside Pixco adapter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Many cheap adapters are working like this: an outer ring can be rotated and on this ring (inside the adapter) is a <strong>small lever<\/strong> which is directly<strong> coupled to the aperture mechanism<\/strong> when a lens is mounted. This sounds like a good idea at first but the problem with my <strong>Pixco adapter<\/strong> is: <strong>turning the adapter&#8217;s aperture ring just 4<\/strong>\u00b0 means you traveled <strong>all the way from fully open to fully closed <\/strong>. This makes <strong>setting the aperture<\/strong> quite an <strong>awful experience<\/strong>. The <strong>numbers on the the ring<\/strong> are telling you <strong>how many stops you have stopped down<\/strong> the lens. So in case you have mounted an f1.4 lens &#8220;F&#8221; means you are shooting at f1.4 while setting it to &#8220;1&#8221; means you are shooting at f2.0, &#8220;2&#8221; means you are shooting at f2.8 and so on.<br \/>\nThis makes <strong>setting a desired aperture<\/strong> value quite an<strong> easy task<\/strong> (the mechanism is clickless by the way).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong> I now finally got a <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2q0ZiU9\">Rayqual Nikon-G to Sony-E adapter<\/a> (affiliate link) and this is now the adapter I recommend. Compared to the metabones you unfortunately lose the detachable Arca Swiss plate, but in return you get light baffles to reduce reflections and an aperture ring with click stops!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8087\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8087\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8087\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC09992.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC09992.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC09992-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/DSC09992-768x466.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8087\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rayqual Nikon-G to Sony-E Adapter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The only real downside: in some countries it is very expensive as there are no distributors and it needs to be shipped directly from Japan.<\/p>\n<h1>Conclusion<\/h1>\n<p>If you just intend to use <strong>old manual Nikon lenses<\/strong> that have their own aperture ring many of the<strong> cheap adapters may be up to the task<\/strong> as well. But if you<strong> seriously<\/strong> consider <strong>using Nikon G lenses<\/strong> without an aperture ring on your A7 series camera it may be worthwhile to <strong>invest a little more<\/strong> money for a more sophisticated adapter like the Metabones (you can get one at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00GBMI936\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00GBMI936&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=httpphillinet-20&amp;linkId=6MI7FE4P7VJ5GUH5\">Amazon.com<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=httpphillinet-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00GBMI936\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\">\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.de\/gp\/product\/B00GBMI936\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1638&amp;creative=6742&amp;creativeASIN=B00GBMI936&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=httpphillinet-21\" rel=\"nofollow\">Amazon.de<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-de.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=httpphillinet-21&amp;l=as2&amp;o=3&amp;a=B00GBMI936\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\"> <em>affiliate links<\/em>) or Rayqual (<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2q0ZiU9\">Amazon.com<\/a> affiliate link).<br \/>\nOne final word of caution:&nbsp; <strong>don&#8217;t buy the Pixco adapter<\/strong> I showed in some of the pictures. The biggest problem is neither the short throw of the aperture ring, nor that the &#8220;open &lt;-&gt; close&#8221; markings are printed in the exact wrong order, but when using it I noticed strange flares in my pictures. After examining the problem I discovered a <strong>light leak<\/strong>, which I then had to cover with some black tape, as can be seen in the picture below.
