This one had an easy to operate aperture ring but a very stiff focusing ring.&nbsp; You can either<strong> try fixing this yourself<\/strong> with the help of some tutorials or videos on the internet <strong>or bring it to a repair shop<\/strong> instead.&nbsp; The best idea is of course to <strong>buy your lens from a trusted seller<\/strong>. I can recommened this <a href=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/rover\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?icep_ff3=11&amp;pub=5575156171&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337820268&amp;customid=&amp;icep_store=vintagephotoequipmentandother&amp;ipn=psmain&amp;icep_vectorid=229466&amp;kwid=902099&amp;mtid=824&amp;kw=lg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ebay shop<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"text-decoration: none; border: 0; padding: 0; margin: 0;\" src=\"http:\/\/rover.ebay.com\/roverimp\/1\/711-53200-19255-0\/1?ff3=11&amp;pub=5575156171&amp;toolid=10001&amp;campid=5337820268&amp;customid=&amp;store=vintagephotoequipmentandother&amp;mpt=[CACHEBUSTER]\" alt=\"\"> (affiliate link) as I have bought lenses there myself.<br \/>\nTurning the <strong>focusing ring<\/strong> from infinity to 1.0 m takes about <strong>120\u00b0<\/strong>, turning the <strong>aperture ring<\/strong> from f\/2.0 to f\/22 takes about <strong>80\u00b0<\/strong>. The aperture ring has <strong>no click stops<\/strong>. I prefer click stops but in case you consider filming with this lens you may prefer it the way it is. There is no official hood I know of. Using filters is not a problem as the filter ring doesn&#8217;t rotate.<br \/>\nThis lens is <strong>made from aluminium<\/strong> which contributes to the low weight but is also <strong>very good at attracting scratches<\/strong>. Newer versions are still made from aluminum but painted black and don&#8217;t attract scratches as much to my experience.<\/p>\n<h1>Vignetting and colorcast<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3703 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/vignetting_jupiter-9.jpg\" alt=\"vignetting jupiter-9 85mm 2.0 zorki fed m39 rangefinder\" width=\"800\" height=\"651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/vignetting_jupiter-9.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/vignetting_jupiter-9-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/vignetting_jupiter-9-768x625.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Taking the physical dimensions into account <strong>vignetting is suprisingly low at only 1.6 EV wide open<\/strong> and <strong>rarely noticeable further stopped down<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h1>Sharpness<\/h1>\n<p><em>infinity<\/em><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3713 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Sharpness_Jupiter-9.jpg\" alt=\"jupiter 9 85mm 2.0 soviet bokeh portrait sony a7 review e-mount leica sunstars sharpness close coma resolution contrast\" width=\"800\" height=\"2212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Sharpness_Jupiter-9.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Sharpness_Jupiter-9-108x300.jpg 108w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Sharpness_Jupiter-9-768x2124.jpg 768w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Sharpness_Jupiter-9-463x1280.jpg 463w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><br \/>\nWide open the lens is <strong>somewhat<\/strong> soft and <strong>not really contrasty<\/strong> in general. This can be favorable for portraits, for landscape and architecture, not so much. <strong>The center looks pretty good af f\/2.8, the midframe at f\/5.6 and the corners quite ok at f\/11.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>close focus<\/em><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3710 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Sharpness_close_jupiter-9.jpg\" alt=\"jupiter 9 85mm 2.0 soviet bokeh portrait sony a7 review e-mount leica sunstars sharpness close\" width=\"800\" height=\"1734\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Sharpness_close_jupiter-9.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Sharpness_close_jupiter-9-138x300.jpg 138w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Sharpness_close_jupiter-9-768x1665.jpg 768w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Sharpness_close_jupiter-9-591x1280.jpg 591w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><br \/>\nFor these shots I was using the VM-E helicoid adapter at maximum extension (around 4 mm), so keep in mind you are looking at 100% crops of photos taken at the <strong>extended(!) minimum focus distance<\/strong>. The <strong>lens was never intended to be used at these distances<\/strong> and does not incorporate a floating elements design either, still the performance <strong>wide open<\/strong> <strong>isn&#8217;t all that bad<\/strong>. <strong>Stop down to f\/2.8<\/strong> and things look <strong>very good<\/strong> here.<\/p>\n<h1>Flare resistance<\/h1>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3707\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3707\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3707 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/jupiter_9_85mm_2.0_flare.jpg\" alt=\"jupiter-9 85mm 2.0 flare lens resistance sony a7s a7 \" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/jupiter_9_85mm_2.0_flare.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/jupiter_9_85mm_2.0_flare-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/jupiter_9_85mm_2.0_flare-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3707\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sony A7s | Jupiter-9 85mm 2.0 | f\/11<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The flare resistance is certainly <strong>nothing to write home about<\/strong> and the lens certainly shows it&#8217;s age here. The edges get blurred quite a lot as can be seen in the example above. In real world shooting I did not even once notice loCA in a bothersome way in any of my pictures. Only with the use of the helicoid adapter (which works as a 4 mm extension tube here) at the extended minimum focus distance loCA start to appear.<\/p>\n<p><em>lateral<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the corners you can spot <strong>some<\/strong> <strong>lateral&nbsp;CAs <\/strong>which can be easily corrected in post, as can be seen in the example below (100% crop). The lens is <strong>small, lightweight, affordable<\/strong>, offers<strong> great bokeh<\/strong> and <strong>stopped down sharpness isn&#8217;t bad<\/strong> either. Still I see it more as a <strong>special purpose lens for portraiture<\/strong> than a general purpose tele. <strong>Sharpness<\/strong> and especially <strong>contrast<\/strong> <strong>aren&#8217;t up to my taste for landscape<\/strong> and architecture, neither are the sunstars.<br \/>\nThere are also lenses with better handling, as the <strong>aperture ring has no click stops<\/strong> you pretty much have to look at the lens when changing the aperture, which is something I don&#8217;t like. There also seems to be quite a bit <strong>sample variation<\/strong>. I have had two of these lenses so far, one with wobbly aperture ring and stiff focusing ring, the other one quite ok, so only buy from trusted sellers or be sure to <strong>try before buy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, who is this lens for?<\/strong> Anyone, who looks for a <strong>small yet fast and affordable portrait lens<\/strong> and can live with the so so build quality and handling.
