85mm 1:1.7 in 1970\u00a0with an all metal focusing ring of the hill and valley design (MC-II, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96189377@N08\/16500645249\/in\/album-72157648452492544\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linkt to image<\/a>) which was followed in 1973\u00a0by a version with a rubberized focusing ring (MC-X, pictured in this post). The next \u00a0makeover happened in 1978 when the 1.7\/85 was updated to MD.<\/p>\n<p>All three versions are very similar mechanically and the optical design has remained the same as well so you can buy either one. It might be that the coatings were improved during the production of the lens but I don&#8217;t have\u00a0any reliable information about that.<\/p>\n<h1>Sharpness<\/h1>\n<p>The Minolta MC 1.7\/85 was tested on the Sony a7. K<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96189377@N08\/16324889650\/sizes\/o\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lick here <\/a>to see the 100% crops.<\/p>\n<p>You can find the full resolution test images in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96189377@N08\/sets\/72157648452492544\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Minolta MC 1.7\/85\u00a0flickr set<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/1.7:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Decent\u00a0resolution and low contrast. \u00a0Performance is pretty even across the\u00a0frame though.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/2.8:\u00a0<\/strong>The softness is mostly gone, contrast and resolution are good in the center and midframe, the corners only improve a little.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/4:\u00a0<\/strong>Very good sharpness across most of the frame, the corners are a little softer but still good. Contrast is noticeably higher than at f\/2.8.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/5.6 and f\/8:\u00a0<\/strong>Very good sharpness across the frame.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/11: <\/strong>A little softer due to diffraction.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2843\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC00170.jpg\" alt=\"Minolta MC Rokkor 85mm 1:1.7\" width=\"800\" height=\"755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC00170.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC00170-300x283.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC00170-768x725.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>Comment<\/h1>\n<p>The <strong>Minolta MC 1.7\/85<\/strong> is a <strong>very nice lens for portraits and a good all purpose lens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>f\/1.7<\/strong> it already has <strong>quite good resolution<\/strong> and <strong>nice but not perfectly smooth bokeh<\/strong> but due to spherical aberration <strong>contrast is rather low<\/strong>. I think this characteristic works very well for portraits but it is a distinctly different look from that of modern very well corrected lenses like the Batis 1.8\/85. The sharpness is also \u00a0even across the frame so you can put your subject anywhere in the frame and not just in the center.<\/p>\n<p>Stopped down to <strong>f\/2.8 contrast is a lot higher<\/strong> but for best contrast you should stop down to f\/4.\u00a0For best across the frame sharpness stop down to<strong> f\/5.6<\/strong> where it <strong>performs very well for landscape photography<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Typically for a Minolta MC lens <strong>built quality is great<\/strong>, it doesn\u2019t get much better than this. The lens is made of nothing but metal and glass and the focusing ring is very pleasant to use. This is <strong>not a small\u00a0lens<\/strong> especially with the original hood and there are significantly smaller fast 85mm lenses. Handling on the Sony a7 is still okay but it is at the limit of being comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>So all in all I can <strong>recommend this lens<\/strong>.
