This is an issue that cannot fully be solved by the optical design &#8211; at least when following the quest to create compact lenses. But there is something we can do: fix this in post. How to do it? I will show you in this article.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n\n<h2>What is color cast?<\/h2>\n<p>Some wide angle lenses will create a color cast in the corners and sometimes border regions of the frame when used on digital cameras. This mainly affects compact (rangefinder) wide angle lenses with their rear element very close to the sensor. The later BSI sensor Sony cameras mainly show a slight symmetrical green color cast in the corners. The same lens can show a nasty asymmetrical magenta color cast on the Leica M10 though. The benefits of this method: it works with any kind of image files (all raw files + jpegs) and the correction can be turned into a preset for very easy application<\/p>\n<p>First thing you should do is take a picture of an evenly lit white surface. I was just using a white wall in the house for this. I set the lens to infinity, the camera to base ISO and took a picture. The center of the frame should be neutral grey, even with those two set to 100. If that isn&#8217;t the case adjust the global white balance first.<\/p>\n<p>Now I start in one corner with one gradient. As the color cast is green I am increasing the teint to neutralize the color cast. I find radial filters a bit trickier to set up, but you don&#8217;t have to deal with every corner separately. Even if it only looks like 90% good it should be totally sufficient for most cases. Unfortunately it comes with two disadvantages: it only works with DNG files and you cannot turn the correction into a preset.<\/p>\n<p>We will again be using the Funleader 18mm 8.0 as an example, but this time when used on the Leica M10 where it creates a horrendous asymmetrical color cast:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35688\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35688\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35688\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Funleader_18mm_8.0_M_Leica_M10_colorcast.jpg\" alt=\"Funleader 18mm 8.0 pro m-mount e-mount review caplens contrast sharpness pancake tiny lens\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Funleader_18mm_8.0_M_Leica_M10_colorcast.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Funleader_18mm_8.0_M_Leica_M10_colorcast-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Funleader_18mm_8.0_M_Leica_M10_colorcast-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Color cast of Funleader 18mm 8.0 on Leica M10<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What you also need here is a picture of a white evenly lit surface like a white wall. The lens should be set to infinity, the camera to base ISO. This picture is very important here, as you will always need it to correct others. We will call this the subtraction image.<\/p>\n<p>What you do now is select that subtraction image as well as a picture you want to correct and run the Flat-Field Correction (<em>Library<\/em> -&gt; <em>Flat-Field Correction<\/em>). You can even choose to also correct the vignetting if you like (uncheck &#8220;Only correct color cast&#8221;). I often found the vignetting correction too strong though.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35687\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35687\" style=\"width: 612px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35687\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Flat-Field_Correction_Lightroom.jpg\" alt=\"Funleader 18mm 8.0 pro m-mount e-mount review caplens contrast sharpness pancake tiny lens\" width=\"612\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Flat-Field_Correction_Lightroom.jpg 612w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Flat-Field_Correction_Lightroom-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35687\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flat-Field Correction Settings<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lightroom will now create a new DNG file with the correction applied. Luckily this is also possible within Lightroom these days, but it does add additional work, so I wish it would also work directly with any kind of raw files.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Color cast issues can make an otherwise well performing lens look unusable, but not all is lost. As I showed you in this article there are several ways to fix this.
