40mm 2.0 lens &#8211; Minolta released the Hi-Matic E, a compact fixed lens 35mm rangefinder camera with a 40mm 1.7 Rokkor-QF lens.<br \/>\nWhile this lens is manual focus its aperture is being controlled electronically, which is why it is very difficult to turn it into an interchangeable lens that can be used on other cameras.<br \/>\nThere might be only one person crazy enough to salvage the lens elements from such a Hi-Matic E camera, design a new housing for them and adding a manually controlled aperture diaphragm and that is Miyazaki Sadayasu from <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/overview-ms-optics-lenses\/\">MS-Optics<\/a>.<br \/>\nI came across one of these rare lenses in a small camera shop in Hong Kong and as this was a bit of a &#8220;once in a lifetime opportunity&#8221; I bought it without really knowing what I am getting myself into, so here we are.<br \/>\n<em>This lens will be reviewed on the 42mp Sony A7rII and the MS-Optics and I am also not sure if all their casing designs are the same. This is not that uncommon, but it can create some compatibility issues as also the exact radial position of the lens on camera is part of the rangefinder calibration.<br \/>\nWhile this is an M39 lens I bought it with an M39-&gt;M adapter already attached and with that adapter the rangefinder is decently calibrated on my Leica M10 (hard stop is a bit before true infinity though).<br \/>\nUnfortunately there are two issues with this M39-&gt;M adapter: it brings up the 28\/90mm frameline pair &#8211; the most useless one for a 40mm lens &#8211; and it doesn&#8217;t cover the 6-bit reader at all, so if you are using liveview the camera constantly thinks you changed lenses and throws you out of it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38826\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38826\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38826\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Minolta_40mm_1.7_Rokkor-QF_MS-Optics_CLE.jpg\" alt=\"review minolta ltm m39 leica 40mm 1.7 hi-matic e miyazaki sadayasu modified lens contrast resolution m10 42mp 24mp 61mp m6 analogue contrast bokeh vignetting\" width=\"800\" height=\"458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Minolta_40mm_1.7_Rokkor-QF_MS-Optics_CLE.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Minolta_40mm_1.7_Rokkor-QF_MS-Optics_CLE-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Minolta_40mm_1.7_Rokkor-QF_MS-Optics_CLE-768x440.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Minolta\/MS-Optics 40mm 1.7 Rokkor-QF on Minolta CLE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There is no viewfinder blockage on the Minolta CLE that features matching 40mm framelines &#8211; no matter what focus distance is set.<\/p>\n<p>Focus and aperture rings are typical MS-Optics design: the whole lens rotates on focusing and you cannot change the aperture without also changing focus. The whole optical block can also be pulled out of the casing by about 2 mm. From a design like this we shouldn&#8217;t expect great infinity performance at wider apertures.<\/p>\n<p>On my Leica M10 this lens&#8217; infinity hard stop is reached before true infinity which is why f\/1.7 and f\/2.0 look pretty bad. On the Sony A7rII we see that the lens is not very contrasty at f\/1.7, but center and midframe already show a good amount of details.<\/p>\n<p>When stopping down to f\/4.0 most of the frame looks pretty good already, but the extreme corners definitely benefit from stopping down to f\/11. The lens is in good company here, as the same is also true for the Voigtl\u00e4nder VM 40mm 1.2 Nokton as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/vm_40mm_1-4_nokton_mc\/\">Voigtl\u00e4nder VM 40mm 1.4 Nokton<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of size and optical design (meaning here: no aspherical elements) the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/vm_40mm_1-4_nokton_mc\/\">Voigtl\u00e4nder VM 40mm 1.4 Nokton<\/a> is the closest competitor (together with the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-minolta-40mm-2-0-m-rokkor\/\">Minolta\/Leica 40mm 2.0 Summicron\/M-Rokkor<\/a>). apertures and that the situation is much better stopped down.<\/p>\n<p>Veiling flare is still a problem stopped down though and with the sun inside or outside of the frame you will usually encounter a noticeable loss of contrast.<\/p>\n<p>The lens didn&#8217;t come with an actual hood, but with the sun outside the frame shading the lens can lead to noticeable improvements &#8211; of course this is Now when it comes to 40mm lenses there is also the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/vm_40mm_1-4_nokton_mc\/\">Voigtl\u00e4nder VM 40mm 1.4 Nokton Classic<\/a> &#8211; which already by its name claims to have similar qualities.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike this exotic modified 40mm 1.7 Minolta lens the Voigtl\u00e4nder lens is widely available and affordable, so let&#8217;s start this section with a side by side comparisons to the Voigtl\u00e4nder VM 40mm 1.4 Nokton Classic. What I see here is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the Voigtl\u00e4nder lens is a bit wider<\/li>\n<li>the MS-Optics lens shows more optical vignetting<\/li>\n<li>the MS-Optics lens renders more natural out of focus areas stopped down thanks to rounded aperture blades<\/li>\n<li>the Voigtl\u00e4nder lens shows slightly less outlining off center at apertures wider than f\/2.8<\/li>\n<li>by f\/2.8 they are hard to curvature and it doesn&#8217;t really matter whether the lens is being used on a Leica camera with its <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-kolari-ultra-thin-sensor-stack-modification\/\">thin filter stack<\/a> or a Sony camera with a thicker one:<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"osc-res-tab tabbable That being said I can also see some people preferring this Minolta lens because of its softer, lower contrast rendering, especially at closer distances where the field curvature is not that noticeable.<\/p>\n<h2>Sunstars<\/h2>\n<p>As fast as I know the Minolta Hi-Matic E had an electronically controlled aperture diaphragm with 5 aperture blades. During the conversion process this has been replaced with a manually controlled aperture diaphragm with 12 rounded aperture blades.<\/p>\n<p>The alignment of the blades is not perfect on this lens and with the sun or other big light sources in the frame it is not that easy to create sunstars at all. Many of these fixed lens 35mm cameras are long forgotten now, but there are some tinkerers out there going through the trouble turning those into interchangeable lenses usable on today&#8217;s cameras and this alone deserves my utmost respect.<\/p>\n<p>If you compare this Minolta 40mm 1.7 Rokkor-QF modified-by-MS-Optics to a modern mass production lens you will most likely be disappointed by its quirky handling and in terms of optical performance there are very few reasons to prefer this lens to e.g. a <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/vm_40mm_1-4_nokton_mc\/\">Voigtl\u00e4nder VM 40mm 1.4 MC<\/a>, which can be easily bought for less money.<\/p>\n<p>The target audience for this conversion must be mostly fans of the Minolta Hi-Matic E &#8211; or rather its lens &#8211; that want to enjoy it on a (digital) modern camera or people looking for something different\/exotic. When I bought this lens I was in the latter category and I haven&#8217;t been disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>Even by MS-Optics standards this is a very delicate lens and one that demands some additional care, but now &#8211; 50 years after the Minolta Hi-Matic E had been released &#8211; it is still possible to take nice pictures with it on a modern digital camera (as well as on a still serviceable analogue M-mount camera). Who would have thought of that in 1971?<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hayatacamera.co.jp\/services\/miyazaki\/\">Hayata Camera<\/a> from Japan is still offering a conversion service for this lens through MS-Optics, the Minolta Hi-Matic E is easily available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/sch\/i.html?_from=R40&amp;_trksid=p2380680.m570.l1313&amp;_nkw=minolta+hi+matic+e&amp;_sacat=0&amp;mkcid=1&amp;mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&amp;siteid=0&amp;campid=5337820268&amp;toolid=20008&amp;mkevt=1\">ebay.com<\/a> (advertisement\/affiliate link) for ~$100<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Alternatives<\/h2>\n<p>The number of 40mm lenses for M-mount is actually surprisingly low.
