Unlike the <a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-canon-ef-70-200m-4-0l-usm\/\">70-200mm 4.0 L<\/a> recently reviewed by me the outer casing seems to be mostly made of plastic, same goes for the filter thread. Nevertheless the lens feels <strong>very substantial<\/strong> and by no means cheap.<br \/>\nIt takes about 120\u00b0 to turn&nbsp;the very broad focusing ring from infinity to 0.9 m. The focusing ring is also <strong>not fly-by-wire<\/strong> and there is<strong> no slack<\/strong> when changing the direction of rotation (very) often seen on newer Nikon lenses.<br \/>\n<strong>Nothing moves externally<\/strong> and the focus ring is easily operated.&nbsp; In addition there is an AF &lt;-&gt; MF button and a focus limiter.<br \/>\nThe<strong> lens hood is very big<\/strong>, very plasticy but is at least covered with velvet inside. A tripod collar is not available for this lens.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4010\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4010\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4010 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/canon_135mm_2.0_a7rii_lens_hood.jpg\" alt=\"Canon EF 135mm 2.0 L USM with lens hood mounted\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/canon_135mm_2.0_a7rii_lens_hood.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/canon_135mm_2.0_a7rii_lens_hood-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/canon_135mm_2.0_a7rii_lens_hood-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Canon EF 135mm 2.0 L USM with lens hood mounted<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Personally I think the <strong>handling qualities<\/strong> of this lens are <strong>very good<\/strong>, but it is also about <strong>as big and as heavy as I want a lens for the A7 cameras to be<\/strong> (when using it handheld) and it is a better fit for the 2nd generation cameras in terms of balance.<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"wp-image-3780 size-full\">Autofocus<\/h1>\n<p>I have only tested this lens with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B01C7A3W7S\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B01C7A3W7S&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=httpphillinet-20&amp;linkId=773159eaf9ca5d9f72c680e941f6d5bf\">Sigma MC-11<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=httpphillinet-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B01C7A3W7S\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\"><\/strong>(300$, <em>affiliate link<\/em>). Which works<strong> quite good and snappy in decent lighting conditions <\/strong>as there is rarely any hunting even when going from infinity to the minimum focus distance.<br \/>\n<strong>In the dark<\/strong> <strong>things don&#8217;t look as great<\/strong>: there is<strong> much more hunting involved<\/strong> so I often switched to manual focus in the dark.<\/p>\n<h1>Vignetting<\/h1>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4059 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/vignetting_Canon_135mm.jpg\" alt=\"canon ef 135mm 2.0 l usm sony a7rii a7 7-series ilce-7 review detail bokeh portrait vignetting vignette\" width=\"800\" height=\"651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/vignetting_Canon_135mm.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/vignetting_Canon_135mm-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/vignetting_Canon_135mm-768x625.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wide open<\/strong> there is <strong>visible vignetting of roughly 1.7 EV<\/strong>, stopped down to f\/5.6 it is negligible. Not only does it offer <strong>astonishing sharpness at all distances<\/strong>, it also manages to combine this with a<strong> wonderful bokeh<\/strong> and it has therfore already become <strong>one of my most favourite portrait lenses<\/strong> and easily so.<\/p>\n<p>From a <strong>technical point of view<\/strong> the <strong>work against bright light is nothing to write home about<\/strong>. From my personal standpoint I sometimes like having a little flare in my portrait shots so this doesn&#8217;t bother me too much, but your mileage may vary here. The <strong>loCA correction could also be a little better<\/strong>, but as I am used to shoot portraits with the Nikon AF-S 85mm 1.4G things doesn&#8217;t look so bad here in comparison.<br \/>\nI also got word this lens <strong>does not work very well with the cheaper adapters<\/strong>, but I have only used it with the Sigma MC-11 personally and was mostly happy with it&#8217;s performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, who is this lens for?<\/strong> Anyone, who looks for a <strong>very good, fast portrait tele <\/strong><strong>with excellent sharpness and very smooth bokeh.<\/strong> A few years ago this lens was pretty much without competition. <strong>Today it might be worth taking a closer look at the <a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-samyang\/\">Samyang 135mm 2.0<\/a><\/strong>, which also offers great performance at a <strong>cheaper<\/strong> price point, if you can live with it&#8217;s lack of autofocus.<\/p>\n<p><em>You can get one used for <strong>700$\/700\u20ac<\/strong> on <a
