Let&#8217;s have a closer look at this 28mm lens with its odd f\/1.9 maximum aperture.<br \/>\n<em>This lens will be reviewed on the 42mp Sony A7rII and the 24mp Leica M10.<br This Voigtl\u00e4nder 28mm 1.9 Ultron had been released in 2001, so it can still be considered one of Cosina&#8217;s earlier rangefinder lenses and there are some notable differences compared to their latest M-mount lenses.<\/p>\n<p>Being an M39 lens means you need an M39-&gt;M-mount adapter to use this lens on your modern digital M-mount camera. These adapters add another variable to the equation that may screw up your rangefinder coupling and the lens will most likely not sit perfectly centered on your camera.<br \/>\nThe benefit is that you are also able to mount this lens on some older rangefinder cameras that feature the M39 mount (also known as LTM = Leica Thread Mount).<\/p>\n<p>Most of Cosina&#8217;s current black lenses are made from matte anodized aluminium. Here the situation is a bit different though: the 28mm 1.9 Ultron looks a lot like the Leica &#8220;black paint&#8221; cameras and lenses, and with a lot of use it will show a similar kind of wear (&#8220;brassing&#8221; as some people call it), but the lens is too light to be made of actual brass. Going by its weight I am guessing it is also made from aluminium. The focus ring has a very nice and perfectly even resistance and turns about 90\u00b0 from the minimum focus distance of 0.7 m to infinity.<br \/>\nThe aperture ring has equidistant and distinct bayonet, it is held in place by a small screw on the side. Wide open I measure about 3.4 EV corner shading which is a whole lot and the same as the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-voigtlander-vm-28mm-2-0-ultron-type-i\/\">Voigtl\u00e4nder 28mm 2.0 MK II<\/a>. Without going too much into technical details optical vignetting leads to the truncation of light circles towards the borders of the frame.<br \/>\nIn the center of the frame almost every lens will render a perfect circle, but only lenses with very low optical vignetting will keep this shape in the corners.<br \/>\nSo in the following comparison we move from the center (left) to the extreme latest <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-voigtlander-vm-28mm-2-0-ultron-type-i\/\">Voigtl\u00e4nder VM 28mm 2.0 Ultron MK II<\/a> showed massive optical vignetting and admittedly I was hoping this older and bigger lens may perform better in this category. In fact the optical vignetting of this older lens is lower, but not nearly enough to get excited about. The <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-7artisans-28mm-1-4-fe-plus\/\">7Artisans 28mm 1.4<\/a> still performs the best here, even at f\/1.4 it shows less optical vignetting than the Voigtl\u00e4nders at f\/1.9 and f\/2.0.<\/p>\n<p>All the lenses in this comparison also show noticeable onion ring structures caused by their aspherical elements.<\/p>\n<p><em>All shots have been taken at 0.5 m focus distance, you may get slightly different results at other distances. Stopped down to f\/2.8 this effect is already gone.<\/p>\n<p>On the Leica M10 we see a steady decline in sharpness towards the corners and I would use f\/11 for best across frame sharpness.<\/p>\n<p>On a Sony camera the corners looks significantly worse, even at f\/11 they don&#8217;t look particularly good.<\/p>\n<p>In this category the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-voigtlander-vm-28mm-2-0-ultron-type-i\/\">Voigtl\u00e4nder VM 28mm 2.0 Ultron MK II<\/a> is an amazing performer by comparison. This combination is not necessarily the best news for a pleasant out of focus rendering &#8211; at least to my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>This is the main reason why I wanted to have a closer look at this older lens in the first place, to see if it has a more pleasing out of focus rendering than the modern ones, so let&#8217;s find out.<\/p>\n<h3>Close Distance<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45375\" minimum focus distance, so for taking pictures like the first two above I used a Sony camera with a <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/leica-m-to-sony-e-close-focus-adapters\/\">close focus adapter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I think we might be seeing slightly more nervous bokeh compared to the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-voigtlander-vm-28mm-2-0-ultron-type-i\/\">Voigtl\u00e4nder VM 28mm 2.0 Ultron MK II<\/a> here.<\/p>\n<h3>Mid Distance<\/h3>\n<figure 28mm 1.9 Ultron do have a bit of a &#8220;vintage&#8221; look to them, as the lens simply doesn&#8217;t have that bitingly high contrast of the new Voigtl\u00e4nder lenses and out of focus areas can appear more structured towards the corners.<\/p>\n<p>In the last two pictures the field curvature is also obvious. While the center of the frame is blurred, the same cannot be said about the border and corner regions. Even better suited are fast 35mm lenses. The most compact option is the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-voigtlander-vm-35mm-1-2-iii\/\">Voigtl\u00e4nder VM 35mm 1.2 III<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_46553\" here&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-voigtlander-vm-28mm-2-0-ultron-type-i\/\">Voigtl\u00e4nder VM 28mm 2.0 Ultron MK II<\/a> also shows this effect, as it also lenses that lead to distinct sunstars. If you want to know more about sunstar rendering of different lenses have a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/best-lenses-for-sunstars\/\">this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Chromatic aberration<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>lateral<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Voigtl\u00e4nder 28mm 1.9 Ultron hardly shows any lateral CA, as it is from an era before digital cameras were the norm, this doesn&#8217;t come as a big surprise.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>longitudinal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Bokeh fringing is definitely a thing with this lens at f\/1.9, as we see magenta outlining in the foreground as well as green outlining in the background. The spherical aberration masks this aberration a bit though.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"osc-res-tab tabbable   osc-tabs-left\"><div style=\"clear:both;width: 100%;\"><ul class=\"nav osc-res-nav nav-tabs href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-voigtlander-vm-28mm-2-0-ultron-type-i\/\">Voigtl\u00e4nder VM 28mm 2.0 Ultron MK II<\/a> in this category? And this is one such case. After having used all three generations of this lens that have been released between 2001 and 2021, I see clear improvements with every generation.<\/p>\n<p>Contrast, resolution and also flare resistance have been greatly increased, at the same time size and weight have been significantly reduced.
