It feels very solid because it has an all-metal housing and everything fit&#8217;s tightly.<\/p>\n<p>The focusing ring is turned by the camera if you use AF, to focus manuall you need to switch the camera to manual focus and I would recommend to dedicate a button to the AF\/MF switch.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It also has a variable focus limiter and you can limit the AF to either 1.5m to any distance you like or from any distance you choose to infinity. I have never before seen such a design but after you have figured out how it works it works well.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Size, Weight and Handling<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Canon_nFD_24mmf2p8-7.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/h1>\n<p>For a 200mm lens the Minolta actually isn&#8217;t very large but still it is a big lens and you should support it with your left hand.<\/p>\n<p>This is an AF lens and because of that the <strong>focusing ring<\/strong> turns only about 120 degrees from 1.5\u00a0m to infinity, it has very little resistance and a small amount of play but it is quite grippy. With some practice I managed to get consistent results focusing the lens manually but it wasn&#8217;t a very pleasant experience.<\/p>\n<p>An interesting feature of the Minolta AF 2.8\/200 is that you can slide a small tube over the AF ring so you don&#8217;t accidentally get you fingers in it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twentytwenty\" class=\"twentytwenty-container\" style=\"display: none; max-width: 100%; width: 800px; height: 532px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_APO-2.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_APO-1.jpg\"\/><\/div>\n<p>The Minolta uses an IF-design so it doesn&#8217;t extend when focused closer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5174\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_APO-6.jpg\" alt=\"minolta_af_200mmf2p8_apo-6\" width=\"800\" height=\"669\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_APO-6.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_APO-6-300x251.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_APO-6-768x642.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You control the aperture trough the camera and the aperture is only closed the moment you hit the shutter which causes a small delay if you stop the Minolta down. On the second generation of Alphas the image stabilizer is automatically set to 200mm which saves you some time compared to manual lenses.<\/p>\n<h1>Auto Focus<\/h1>\n<p>The Minolta AF 200mm 1:2.8 APO employs a screw drive AF system, so in order to get AF on the Sony a7 series you need to use an <a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/sony-la-ea4\/\">LA-EA4 adapter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>AF with the LA-EA4 is very fast (and a bit noisy). My results were not very consistent though. Sometimes it worked very precisely and other times focus was off by quite a bit. I didn&#8217;t investigate this too far and just used manual focusing.<\/p>\n<h1>Lens Hood<\/h1>\n<p>The Minolta AF 200mm 1:2.8\u00a0has a very handy, integrated lens hood which is solid, effective and not annoying to handle.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twentytwenty\" class=\"twentytwenty-container\" style=\"display: none; max-width: 100%; width: 800px; height: 1321px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_APO-4.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_APO-5.jpg\"\/><\/div>\n<h1>Filters<\/h1>\n<p>The 72 mm filter thread is made from metal.<\/p>\n<p>The front of the lens does not rotate so polarizers are easy to use.<\/p>\n<h1>Image Quality<\/h1>\n<h3>Vignetting<\/h3>\n<p>At f\/2.8 \u00a0vignetting is moderate\u00a0at about\u00a01.3 stops,\u00a0and barely noticeable (below 0.5 stops) from f\/4.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5161\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/vignetting.jpg\" alt=\"vignetting\" width=\"750\" height=\"610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/vignetting.jpg 750w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/vignetting-300x244.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>Flare Resistance<\/h1>\n<p>The flare resistance is good but not flawless.\u00a0Usually you are fine but it won&#8217;t stand up to direct sunlight.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twentytwenty\" class=\"twentytwenty-container\" style=\"display: none; but the results are consistent with <a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/180mm200mm-prime-comparison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bastian&#8217;s comparison<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.photodo.com\/lens\/Minolta-AF-200mm-f28-APO-886\/images\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Photodo&#8217;s MTF curve<\/a> none the less.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/2.8:\u00a0<\/strong>Very sharp across the frame, corners are nearly as sharp as the center.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/4:\u00a0<\/strong>Excellent in the center, corners improve a little.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/5.6, f\/8:\u00a0<\/strong>Excellent across the frame<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/11:\u00a0<\/strong>A little less sharp due to diffraction.<\/p>\n<p>The Minolta AF 200mm f\/2.8 turns in a remarkable performance here.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Applications<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>The Minolta lends itself to a wide range of applications.<\/p>\n<p>I used it quite a bit for <strong>landscape photography<\/strong>. If you nail focus results are great but focusing can be a challenge and I had quite a few images with less than ideal focus which I would have nailed with a good manual lens.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96189377@N08\/29355579583\/sizes\/o\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5155\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_A7-21.jpg\" alt=\"minolta_af_200mmf2p8_a7-21\" width=\"800\" height=\"561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_A7-21.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_A7-21-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_A7-21-768x539.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For <strong>portraits<\/strong> you can isolate a person\u2019s upper body completely from the background or even isolate the whole person from it\u2019s surroundings. Because the bokeh is great and it\u2019s sharp across the frame you aren\u2019t limited in your composition but you should allow some time for the focusing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5253\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mm_f2p8_APO.jpg\" alt=\"minolta_af_200mm_f2p8_apo\" width=\"800\" height=\"561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mm_f2p8_APO.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mm_f2p8_APO-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mm_f2p8_APO-768x539.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At least on the Sony a7 series <strong>I wouldn\u2019d recommend this lens for sport photography<\/strong> because the LA-EA4\u2019s focus points are all very central and when I tried to track a somewhat distant flying gull it failed me most of the time. I really hope that Sony will release a LA-EA 6 adapter with the much better AF module from the a77II\/ a99II which would turn the Minolta 2.8\/200 into an even more versatile lens.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5139\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5139\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/96189377@N08\/29948290236\/sizes\/o\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5139 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_A7-5.jpg\" alt=\"minolta_af_200mmf2p8_a7-5\" width=\"800\" height=\"561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_A7-5.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_A7-5-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Minolta_AF_200mmf2p8_A7-5-768x539.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5139\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Didn&#8217;t manage to catch that one in the air<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I think the Minolta can work very well in a kit with a 24mm, 50mm and 100mm lens and I would choose it over a 4\/70-200 most of the time.<\/p>\n<h1>Alternatives<\/h1>\n<p><strong>Canon EF 2.8\/200 L USM: <\/strong>I think performance wise\u00a0the Minolta is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.photodo.com\/lens\/Canon-EF-200mm-f28-L-II-USM-41\/images\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a bit better<\/a>\u00a0but the Canon will offer quieter and smoother AF and a more pleasant manual focus experience because of it&#8217;s USM drive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mamiya 2.8\/200 APO:\u00a0<\/strong>Being a medium format lens the Mamiya is quite a lot heavier and it has a minimum\u00a0focusing distance of 2.5m but I suspect that it&#8217;s CA correction is superior.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nikon Ai-S 180mm 1:2.8 ED:\u00a0<\/strong>The Nikon is much more affordable and a pleasant to handle MF lens and it&#8217;s performance in the center is similar but it <a href=\"http:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/180mm200mm-prime-comparison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can&#8217;t keep <\/a>up in the\u00a0corners and has a longer short focusing distance.<\/p>\n<h1>Conclusion<\/h1>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>pros<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Excellent sharpness<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Very pleasant bokeh<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Build quality<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<td><strong>average<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Price<\/li>\n<li>Size and Weight<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<td><strong>cons<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Unpleasant manual focusing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Unrealiable AF (with the LA-EA 4)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Optically the <strong>Minolta\u2019s performance is stunning<\/strong>, even by today\u2018s standards. It is very sharp from f\/2.8 even in the corners and only gains a little as you stop down. Bokeh is very smooth. CA are corrected well but certainly not perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>Of course there is a <strong>catch<\/strong>, the Minolta AF 2.8\/200 APO it is the <strong>focusing experience<\/strong>. AF with the LA-EA4 is fast but not very reliable and manual focus suffers from the short focus throw and very little resistance as well as the play of the focusing ring. I could work around it most of the time but not always.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the focusing <strong>handling is great<\/strong>, the lens is built to very high standards and cleverly engineered, I wished all tele lenses had such clever lens hood.
