They started in 1993 with the world&#8217;s first lens with these specifications, the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-af-28mm-1-4-d-the-wide-angle-noct-nikkor\/\">Nikon AF 28mm 1.4D<\/a>, and then released an updated version in 2017, this Nikon AF-S 28mm 1.4E. It is bigger than the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-af-s-24mm-1-4g-outdated-or-modern-classic\/\">Nikon AF-S 24mm 1.4G<\/a> and noticeably bigger than its predecessor, the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-af-28mm-1-4-d-the-wide-angle-noct-nikkor\/\">Nikon AF-D 28mm 1.4<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-sigma-28mm-1-4-art\/\">Sigma 28mm 1.4 Art<\/a> is similar in size.<\/p>\n<p>Being an &#8220;E&#8221; lens &#8211; which means the aperture diaphragm is controlled electronically &#8211; you need a fancier adapter to be able to change the aperture value when using this lens on an E-mount camera. I tried the Commlite adapter in the past and that has been an awful experience. I can recommend the<a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-monster-la-fe1-and-la-fe2-af-adapter-nikon-f-to-sony-e\/\"> Monster LA-FE1 and LA-FE2 adapters<\/a> though.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a Z-mount user this lens works like a native one via the FTZ adapters.<\/p>\n<h2>AF performance<\/h2>\n<p>I tested the AF via the FTZ II adapter on a Nikon Zf which worked flawlessly. The f\/1.4 primes are not as fast focusing as the f\/2.8 zooms though.<\/p>\n<p>I also used this lens with the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-monster-la-fe1-and-la-fe2-af-adapter-nikon-f-to-sony-e\/\">Monster LA-FE adapters<\/a> on Sony E-mount cameras. The Nikon AF-S 28mm 1.4E and the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-sigma-28mm-1-4-art\/\">Sigma 28mm 1.4 Art<\/a> show very similar amounts of optical vignetting, but I do see the Sigma slightly ahead, as the Nikon&#8217;s out of focus highlights off center look a bit more like lemons with a bit of light spill at the ends.<\/p>\n<p>All these lenses make use of aspherical elements and all can show onion ring structures in out of focus highlights.<\/p>\n<h2>Sharpness<\/h2>\n<h3>MTF-Graphs<\/h3>\n<p>The MTF graphs of this Nikon AF-S 28mm 1.4E do actually look really good. Very high contrast and resolution over most of the frame and almost perfectly corrected astigmatism. These graphs look so much better than those of the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-af-28mm-1-4-d-the-wide-angle-noct-nikkor\/\">Nikon AF-D 28mm 1.4<\/a>. Being an &#8220;E&#8221; lens, I had to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-monster-la-fe1-and-la-fe2-af-adapter-nikon-f-to-sony-e\/\">Monster LA-FE2 adapter<\/a> to be able to change its aperture for taking these shots but I found its length to be a little bit too short, which is why I am also showing you how the lens performs on the Nikon Zf via Nikon&#8217;s own FTZ II adapter.<\/p>\n<p>On the Nikon Zf I hardly see a midzone dip, only the corners are slightly softer at wider apertures. From f\/2.0 there is little difference between those two lenses here.<\/p>\n<h2>Flare resistance<\/h2>\n<p>As always evaluating flare is a complex matter since you can get any lens to look bad if you push it hard enough and a slight change of scenario can affect results a lot.<\/p>\n<p>Because of how this lens works on the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-monster-la-fe1-and-la-fe2-af-adapter-nikon-f-to-sony-e\/\">Monster LA-FE2 adapter<\/a> it is noticeably more difficult for me to evaluate the performance in this category.<\/p>\n<p>From everything I have seen I will still go as far as to say this has been the best performer in this category out of all the fast 28mm I tried so far, as this The Nikon AF-S 28mm 1.4E does not have any of these issues and creates a pleasing bokeh regardless of focus distance.<\/p>\n<p>As said before I compared the bokeh rendering of six different fast 28mm seen good and bad sunstars from Nikon. f\/1.4 AF-S lenses you already know: correcting longitudinal CA has not been the number one task of Nikon&#8217;s optical engineers during the AF-D and AF-S era. For most aberrations it is better corrected than both, the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-af-s-24mm-1-4g-outdated-or-modern-classic\/\">24mm 1.4G<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-af-s-35mm-1-4g\/\">35mm 1.4G<\/a>, and also has visibly higher resolution (don&#8217;t just take my word for it, also have a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lensrentals.com\/blog\/2019\/04\/just-mtf-charts-nikon-prime-lenses\/\">this comparison<\/a> conducted by lensrentals).<\/p>\n<p>This lens was also included in my <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/comparison-fast-28mm-f-1-2-f-1-4-f-1-5-fullframe-lenses\/\">comparison of fast 28mm lenses<\/a>. If you have a look at it, you will notice that it fares well in most categories, but also that the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-sigma-28mm-1-4-art\/\">Sigma 28mm 1.4 Art<\/a> is a very strong competitor and slightly better in some categories (sharpness, CA correction, Coma correction). Where the Nikon stands out is flare resistance though, the only category where the Sigma showed a rather noticeable slip-up.<\/p>\n<p>We still haven&#8217;t seen a 28mm 1.4 lens from one of the major manufacturers for their mirrorless mounts, the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-laowa-28mm-1-2-ffii-argus-the-worlds-fastest-28mm-lens\/\">Laowa 28mm 1.2<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-viltrox-fe-28mm-1-8-af\/\">Viltrox 28mm 1.8 AF<\/a> show, that fast 28mm lenses designed for mirrorless cameras from scratch can be noticeably smaller though.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, this is the most well rounded fast 28mm lens to me &#8211; that is, if you are using Nikon F or Z cameras.<\/p>\n<p><em>buy from <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/40ZbQOV\">Amazon.de<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/bhpho.to\/3RipauI\">B&amp;H<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/sch\/i.html?_nkw=nikon%20af-s%2028mm%201.4&amp;ssPageName=GSTL&amp;mkcid=1&amp;mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&amp;siteid=0&amp;campid=5337820268&amp;toolid=20008&amp;mkevt=1\">ebay.com<\/a> (advertisement\/affiliate links) for <strong>$1.799<\/strong> (new) or <strong>$1.000<\/strong> (used)<\/em><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<h2>Alternatives<\/h2>\n<p>This Nikon AF-S 28mm 1.4E, the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-sigma-28mm-1-4-art\/\">Sigma 28mm 1.4 Art<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-af-28mm-1-4-d-the-wide-angle-noct-nikkor\/\">Nikon AF-D 28mm 1.4<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-laowa-28mm-1-2-ffii-argus-the-worlds-fastest-28mm-lens\/\">Laowa 28mm 1.2 Argus<\/a> are all part of my <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/comparison-fast-28mm-f-1-2-f-1-4-f-1-5-fullframe-lenses\/\">fast 28mm comparison<\/a>, so best have a look there first.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-sigma-28mm-1-4-art\/\"><strong><em>Sigma 28mm 1.4 Art:<\/em><\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nI already discussed in most of the sections above how these lenses compare.
