I personally used it back in the day on Nikon DSLRs until I switched to Sony&#8217;s mirrorless cameras. Now that we have <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-monster-la-fe1-and-la-fe2-af-adapter-nikon-f-to-sony-e\/\">decent AF adapters for these Nikon lenses<\/a> I thought it would be a There is a rubber gasket to be found at the bayonet.<\/p>\n<p>The focus ring features a mechanical coupling to the helicoid (no focus by wire) and it takes a little more than 90\u00b0 from the minimum focus distance (0.85 m) to infinity.<br \/>\nThe resistance is okay, not as nice as a real manual lens or some of Sigma\u2019s better lenses.<br \/>\nMany Nikon AF-S G-lenses show some slack when changing the direction of rotation on the focus ring and even the predecessor, the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-af-85mm-1-4-d-the-ideal-portrait-lens\/\">Nikon AF 85mm 1.4D<\/a>, did. The front and the rear group are fixed, a central group together with the aperture diaphragm is moving. When adapting this lens to other camera systems a too short adapter can also have a negative impact on this lens&#8217; image quality.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the Nikon AF-S 24mm 1.4G and 35mm 1.4G with their rear focus designs &#8211; and also unlike the Nikon AF 85mm 1.4D &#8211; this lens seems to be pretty well sealed. On earlier cameras you are not able to change the aperture due to the lack of an aperture ring.<\/p>\n<h2>AF performance<\/h2>\n<p>When the f\/1.4 AF-S primes hit the market some people were put off by their AF speed, as usually &#8211; especially when directly comparing the Nikon AF-S 85mm 1.4G to the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-af-85mm-1-4-d-the-ideal-portrait-lens\/\">Nikon AF 85mm 1.4D<\/a> &#8211;&nbsp; the newer AF-S lens actually focused slower than the older screwdriven one. circles of the Nikon AF-D 85mm 1.4 and Sony FE 85mm 1.4 GM are directly comparable. All lenses were set to 1.1 m focus distances though.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Regular readers know I did not come across an 85mm lens that is doing better in this category than the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-sony-fe-85mm-1-4-gm\/\">Sony FE 85mm 1.4 GM<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-af-85mm-1-4-d-the-ideal-portrait-lens\/\">Nikon AF-D 85mm 1.4<\/a> actually came close, but interestingly its successor &#8211; the Nikon AF-S 85mm 1.4G being reviewed here &#8211; shows more optical vignetting than the older AF-D lens.<\/p>\n<h2>Sharpness<\/h2>\n<h3>MTF-Graphs<\/h3>\n<p>For the time it was released and considering it uses an optical design without any special glass this Nikon AF-S 85mm 1.4G shows astonishing MTF graphs: very flat field, low astigmatism. The <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-sony-fe-85mm-1-4-gm\/\">Sony FE 85mm 1.4 GM<\/a>&#8216;s MTF graphs actually look extremely similar. The <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-af-s-105mm-1-4-e\/\">Nikon AF-S 105mm 1.4E<\/a> which was released in 2016 shows an even more impressive performance though.<\/p>\n<p><div Nikon AF-S 85mm 1.4G. Compared to its predecessor it offers higher contrast an way better corner performance at wider apertures. However, we still see some color aberrations at wider apertures that only go away on stopping down to f\/4.0 to f\/5.6. At the time this lens was released, it was still the sharpest 85mm 1.4 lens &#8211; quite the achievement considering the lack of special glass elements.<\/p>\n<p>In this regard the latest 85mm 1.4 lenses perform noticeably better. The <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-sigma-85mm-f-1-4-dg-dn-art\/\">Sigma 85mm 1.4 Art DG DN<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-sony-fe-85mm-1-4-gm-mk-ii-a-worthy-update\/\">Sony FE 85mm 1.4 GM II<\/a> are the best we had a look at so far, the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-sony-fe-85mm-1-4-gm\/\">Sony FE 85mm 1.4 GM<\/a> follows closely. This Nikon AF-S 85mm 1.4G looks almost as good in the outer midframe as it does in the center and there is only a smaller gap in this category compared to modern lenses like the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-sigma-85mm-f-1-4-dg-dn-art\/\">Sigma 85mm 1.4 Art DG DN<\/a>&nbsp;and the <a focus distances (needed e.g. for full body portraits) you can visibly separate your subject from the background. The red scooter is a prime example for that.<\/p>\n<p>These days my favorite 85mm 1.4 lens is the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-sony-fe-85mm-1-4-gm\/\">Sony FE 85mm 1.4 GM<\/a> and for me it is actually the benchmark for pleasing out of focus rendering regardless of focal length or maximum aperture. I already compared the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-af-85mm-1-4-d-the-ideal-portrait-lens\/\">Nikon AF-D 85mm 1.4<\/a> to it and saw noticeable differences in favour of the Sony lens. \/><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n<h4>Observations<\/h4>\n<p>First thing I noticed: the Nikon lens actually looks slightly more contrasty in most scenes &#8211; something I did not expect.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of out of focus rendering these two lenses are a very close call in the central part of the frame. I probably wouldn&#8217;t be able to tell them apart.<\/p>\n<p>This is also true for transition from in-focus to out-of-focus, where these two lenses look eerily similar.<\/p>\n<p>Only when moving towards the corners the Sony again shows its strengths: less outlining and less optical vignetting (cat&#8217;s eyes).<\/p>\n<p>If it wasn&#8217;t for the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-sony-fe-85mm-1-4-gm\/\">Sony FE 85mm 1.4 GM<\/a>, I would probably still be using this Nikon AF-S 85mm 1.4G for and bad sunstars from Nikon. While their later F-mount lenses (like the Nikon AF-S 28mm 1.4E) do pretty good some of the earlier ones (like the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-af-s-24mm-1-4g-outdated-or-modern-classic\/\">Nikon AF-S 24mm 1.4G<\/a>) didn&#8217;t.<br \/>\nThis 85mm 1.4G is also one of the earlier ones and it is quite hard to create distinct sunstars with it at all.<br \/>\nIf you want to learn more about this topic have a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/best-lenses-for-sunstars\/\">this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Chromatic aberration<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>lateral<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Interestingly the Nikon AF-S 85mm 1.4G shows hardly any lateral CA so there is nothing I could show you here.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<h3><strong>longitudinal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Correcting longitudinal CA in fast lenses does not seem to be something that was very high on the priority list of Nikon&#8217;s designers during the AF-D and AF-S era.
