It has a 55 mm filter diameter and weighs 375 g.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Minolta MD 100 mm 1:2.5\u00a0<\/strong>has an integrated lens hood, a filter diameter of just 49 mm and it weighs just 310 g. The\u00a0build quality is a little inferior compared to the older Rokkor but optics are the same.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I have also reviewed the\u00a0older <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/minolta-mc-tele-rokkor-100mm-12-5-review\/\">Minolta MC Rokkor 100 mm 1:2.5<\/a>\u00a0which again comes in different versions.\u00a0The youngest MC shares the optics of the MD and the older one is still closely related but the coatings are inferior.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7697\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC08444.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC08444.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC08444-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC08444-768x583.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>Build quality and handling<\/h1>\n<p>The Minolta MD 100 mm 1:2.5 offers <strong>good enough but not great<\/strong> build quality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus Ring<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>focus ring\u00a0<\/strong>travels around 200\u00a0degrees from 1 m to infinity which is\u00a0a good transmission both for focusing portraits and landscapes. The rubberized focus ring offers good grip and a pleasant diameter. The <strong>resistance is pleasant<\/strong> but a little on the higher side.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aperture ring<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The aperture ring is made from plastics and shows some sign of usage on my otherwise very little worn copy. It <strong>feels a bit cheap<\/strong> and while the click-stops are <strong>distinctive enough<\/strong> I have seen better implementations. It has no click-stop between f\/2.5 to f\/4 and f\/16 to f\/22 but half-stops in between.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hood<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Minolta MD 100 mm 1:2.5 has a <strong>handy built-in hood<\/strong>. It does not offer perfect protection of the front element and some times it makes sense to additionally shield it with the the hand but unlike other built-in hoods it won&#8217;t accidentally retract.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twentytwenty\" class=\"twentytwenty-container\" style=\"display: none; max-width: 100%; width: 692px; height: 800px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC08436.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC08437.jpg\"\/><\/div>\n<p><strong>Size and Weight<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At 310g and with a length of just 65 mm the Minolta has the <strong>perfect size for the Sony a7 series and handling is great<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h1>Optical performance<\/h1>\n<p>These results are based on the use with a Sony Alpha 7\/7II.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Flare Resistance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Compared to most other legacy lenses the Minolta MD 2.5\/100 has good coatings but in extreme situations you will notice a small ghost.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7721\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7721\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7721 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC09327-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC09327-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC09327-1-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC09327-1-768x539.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7721\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Not the small blog ob the right. The shadows in this images have been brightened and the highlights darkened, otherwise it wouldn&#8217;t be visible.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In general <strong>veiling flare is well under control<\/strong> but with a bright light source just outside of the frame you can run into <strong>serious issues<\/strong> as demonstrated by these two images:<\/p>\n<div class=\"twentytwenty\" class=\"twentytwenty-container\" style=\"display: none; max-width: 100%; width: 800px; height: 561px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC00353.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC00354-1.jpg\"\/><\/div>\n<p><strong>Chromatic Aberrations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like in almost any other short tele <strong>axial CA isn&#8217;t too well corrected<\/strong> and it can be a bit distracting for some images.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7703\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC00313.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC00313.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC00313-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/DSC00313-768x539.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are traces of lateral CA but the Minolta MD 100 mm 1:2.5 is well corrected in this regard.<\/p>\n<h2>Vignetting<\/h2>\n<p>Vignetting at <strong>f\/2.5<\/strong> is <strong>1.3 stops<\/strong> which can be noticed in critical situations. From <strong>f\/4<\/strong> it is below 0.5 stops which is <strong>insignificant<\/strong> under any circumstance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7739\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Minolta_MD_100mm_f2p5_sharpness_vignetting.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Minolta_MD_100mm_f2p5_sharpness_vignetting.jpg 750w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Minolta_MD_100mm_f2p5_sharpness_vignetting-300x244.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Distortion<\/h2>\n<p>The Minolta MD 100 mm 1:2.5 shows a <strong>very small amount of pincushion distortion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Sharpness<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7735\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Minolta_MD_100mm_f2p5_sharpness_infinity.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"1962\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Minolta_MD_100mm_f2p5_sharpness_infinity.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Minolta_MD_100mm_f2p5_sharpness_infinity-122x300.jpg 122w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Minolta_MD_100mm_f2p5_sharpness_infinity-768x1884.jpg 768w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Minolta_MD_100mm_f2p5_sharpness_infinity-522x1280.jpg 522w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/2.5:\u00a0<\/strong>Very sharp in the center with very good off-center resolution but lower contrast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/4:\u00a0<\/strong>Excellent in the center now and very good midframe. The corners don&#8217;t really improve but vignetting is significantly reduced.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/5.6:\u00a0<\/strong>Very good across the frame.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/8:\u00a0<\/strong>The center is a tad softer, the corners are a tad better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>f\/11: <\/strong>A little softer due to diffraction.<\/p>\n<p>All in all a <strong>very good performance<\/strong>. I don&#8217;t hesitate to use f\/2.5 for about anything and by f\/5.6 there is little left to be desired.<\/p>\n<h1>Alternatives<\/h1>\n<p><strong>Minolta MC 2.5\/100:\u00a0<\/strong>On the plus side the MD&#8217;s predecessor offers better build quality and a more pleasant focusing experience. It is <strong>very sharp<\/strong> with <strong>pleasant bokeh<\/strong> and since it is <strong>just 310g<\/strong> I don&#8217;t hesitate to actually carry it with me unlike some other very nice lenses which I often leave at home because of their weight. Other lenses are often either very good as a landscape lens or a portrait lens but the Minolta performs very well in both categories.<\/p>\n<p>I see <strong>no serious\u00a0drawback<\/strong> of the Minolta but of course there are a few things it does less well. The <strong>axial CA<\/strong> is a weakness of nearly any short tele lens and not much of an issue for most applications like portrait or landscape. Then there is the issue of the <strong>6 straight aperture blades<\/strong> which can be bothering if you shoot for example portraits at f\/4. Since the Minolta is very good from f\/2.5 and I am a sucker for shallow depth of field I rarely do that but YMMV.<\/p>\n<p>At about $140 the Minolta MD 100 mm 1:2.5 offers <strong>great value<\/strong> if you ask me. Sure it isn&#8217;t super fast but usually fast enough and it performs better than most faster lenses and it&#8217;s handling is superior as well so I got many good images out of it and I bring it with me very often.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All in all\u00a0the Minolta MD 100 mm 1:2.5 is a pretty great lens\u00a0which&#8217;s many strengths far\u00a0<\/strong><b>outweigh it&#8217;s weaknesses.
