It also features a much more complex design compared to the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-nikkor-p-85mm-2-0-rf\/\">Nikkor-P 85mm 2.0<\/a> with a <strong>non rotating front barrel<\/strong>, so using a polarizer isn&#8217;t a problem, in case you can find one with the right thread (E40.5).<\/p>\n<h1>Vignetting \/ Colorcast<\/h1>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7818 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/vignetting_nikkor-h_RF_50mm_2.0.jpg\" alt=\"nikon h nikkor rangefinder nikkor-h 50mm 2.0 rf sony a7 a7rii vignette vignetting\" width=\"800\" height=\"651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/vignetting_nikkor-h_RF_50mm_2.0.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/vignetting_nikkor-h_RF_50mm_2.0-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/vignetting_nikkor-h_RF_50mm_2.0-768x625.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wide open<\/strong> there is <strong>noticeable vignetting of roughly 2.0 EV<\/strong>, stopped down to f\/2.8 this improves to 1.3 EV, at f\/4.0 vignetting is only 0.9 EV and at <strong>f\/8.0 it is still 0.9 EV<\/strong>. This is a similar performance compared to the faster <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-nikkor-s-50mm-1-4\/\">Nikkor-S 50mm 1.4<\/a>.<br \/>\nI can also notice a <strong>slight color cast<\/strong> towards the edges on the A7s and A7rII, which I felt the urge to correct for some shots.<\/p>\n<h1>Sharpness<\/h1>\n<p><em>infinity<\/em><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7817 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Sharpness_nikkor_h_50mm_2.0_rf.jpg\" alt=\"nikon h nikkor rangefinder nikkor-h 50mm 2.0 rf sony a7 a7rii sharpness resolution chart contrast\" width=\"800\" height=\"2201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Sharpness_nikkor_h_50mm_2.0_rf.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Sharpness_nikkor_h_50mm_2.0_rf-109x300.jpg 109w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Sharpness_nikkor_h_50mm_2.0_rf-768x2113.jpg 768w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Sharpness_nikkor_h_50mm_2.0_rf-465x1280.jpg 465w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><br \/>\nAt <strong>f\/2.0<\/strong> there is significantly <strong>reduced contrast all over the frame<\/strong>, center shows ok resolution, midframe and corners are lacking. Stop down to <strong>f\/2.5<\/strong> and the <strong>contrast improves significantly<\/strong>, but it needs stopping down to<strong> f\/5.6 for the midframe to look good<\/strong> f\/11 for the corners. It <strong>needs stopping down to f\/4.0 for very good performance<\/strong> on the 42mp sensor.<br \/>\nAt the extended minimum focus distance of 45 cm in macro mode the situation is pretty much the same: <strong>soft at f\/2.0 but sharpness improves considerably on stopping down to f\/4.0<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I also had to refocus the lens stopped down because of <strong>significant focus shift,<\/strong> see the corresponding section farther down this review.<\/p>\n<h1>Flare resistance<\/h1>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8259\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8259\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8259\" src=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/nikkor-h_50mm_2.0_rf_ghosts.jpg\" alt=\"nikon h nikkor rangefinder nikkor-h 50mm 2.0 rf sony a7 a7rii bokeh oof out of focus\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/nikkor-h_50mm_2.0_rf_ghosts.jpg 800w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/nikkor-h_50mm_2.0_rf_ghosts-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/nikkor-h_50mm_2.0_rf_ghosts-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8259\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sony A7rII | Nikon Nikkor-H 50mm 2.0 | f\/8.0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The performance of the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-nikkor-s-50mm-1-4\/\">Nikkor-S 50mm 1.4<\/a> was the worst I have ever seen, but luckily the 50mm 2.0 fares a bit better here. You can see only very<strong> slight<\/strong> green <strong>outlining<\/strong> behind the plane of focus and purple outlining in front of it wide open. Stopping down naturally&nbsp; further improves the performance, as can be seen in the example above.<\/p>\n<p><em>lateral<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Correction of lateral CAs is one of the best I have ever seen<\/strong>. I couldn&#8217;t trace any in the shots I took.<\/p>\n<h1>Focus shift<\/h1>\n<p>Most (old) Sonnar designs are plagued by focus shift and unfortunately the Nikkor-H 50mm 2.0 is no exception here. Focus shift describes the effect of the plane of optimal focus shifting on stopping down. This is actually <strong>less of an issue with the A7 cameras<\/strong> as you will most of the time stop down first and focus after that, but <strong>more of a problem with most Leica rangefinder cameras<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the focus shift between f\/2.0 and f\/2.8 is pretty much negligible, but when stopping down to f\/4.0 you should definetly adjust the focus.<\/p>\n<h1>Alternatives<\/h1>\n<p>When it comes to fast <strong>50mm legacy lenses there are many to choose from.<\/strong> I will therefore mainly cover the similarly sized rangefinder lenses here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-nikkor-s-50mm-1-4\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>Nikkor-S 50mm 1.4<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-jupiter-3-50mm-1-5\/\">Jupiter-3 50mm 1.5:<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nI often cross referenced these lenses above already. The <strong>Nikkor-H<\/strong> is a stop slower but apart from this I think it <strong>is the better lens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Jupiter-8 50mm 2.0:<\/span><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>I did not yet get the chance to use this lens personally but from what I have seen it seems to offer <strong>similar optics but considerably worse build quality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-voigtlander-nokton-50mm-1-5\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>Voigtl\u00e4nder Nokton 50mm 1.5 Asph:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/a><br \/>\nThis is the modern affordable small rangefinder 50mm 1.5. It is a high contrast lens with nice bokeh and great build quality. <strong>I like it and still have it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>Zeiss ZM C Sonnar 50mm 1.5 T*:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\nThis is the <strong>modern interpretation of the 50mm Sonnar<\/strong> lens. Unfortunately I did not yet get the chance to try this one myself but from what I have read and seen so far, this lens combines the Sonnar rendering with <strong>modern coatings and hugely improved performance wide open<\/strong> in terms of sharpness and contrast and costs a little more than the Nokton.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>Leica 50mm lenses:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\nIf you want a lens as fast you can take a look at one of the many versions of the <strong>Summilux 50mm 1.4,<\/strong> I haven&#8217;t used any and they are all <strong>very expensive<\/strong>. If you can get by with a maximum aperture of f\/2.0 you may also take a look at one of the different<strong> Summicron-M 50mm 2.0<\/strong> lenses but they will also be way more expensive and I am certainly no expert on these lenses either.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em><strong>DSLR 50mm lenses:<\/strong><\/em><\/span><br \/>\nOne can find <strong>very cheap<\/strong> lenses here with <strong>good optical qualities<\/strong>, but they will be <strong>much bigger<\/strong> and the really good ones ain&#8217;t as cheap anymore as well. It also <strong>does not show much glow<\/strong> wide open and placing a subject off center still yielded nice results.<br \/>\nRating the <strong>bokeh<\/strong> gave me quite a headache (once more). I don&#8217;t think it is as good as the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-voigtlander-nokton-50mm-1-5\/\">Voigtlander 50mm 1.5<\/a> or even some modern DSLR designs, but I still think it is <strong>better than the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-nikon-nikkor-s-50mm-1-4\/\">Nikkor-S 50mm 1.4<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-jupiter-3-50mm-1-5\/\">Jupiter-3 50mm 1.5 <\/a>in this regard.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t mind <strong>stopping down to f\/11 for best across frame sharpness<\/strong>, you like well defined like <strong>10-stroke sunstars<\/strong>, value very <strong>high build quality<\/strong> but can&#8217;t &#8211; or don&#8217;t want to &#8211; afford the <a href=\"https:\/\/phillipreeve.net\/blog\/review-zeiss-loxia-planar-250-t\/\">Loxia 50mm 2.0<\/a> this might be a <strong>nice alternative<\/strong> for you.<\/p>\n<p><em>You can try getting one of
