Analogue Adventures – Part 29: Kodak Farbwelt 200 (expired)

Kodak Farbwelt 200

I found a few rolls of Kodak Farbwelt 200 that must have expired some 20 years ago and most likely they haven’t been properly stored at all. This first roll I exposed as ISO50 and I had absolutely no idea what to expect. The lab wasn’t happy and told me the film was massively expired and the scanner had a hard time scanning the negatives. Let’s see if some usable pictures came out of this.
Processing (C-41) and scanning was done at urbanfilmlab in Germany.

Color cast is strong, grain is high, resolution and contrast are low. What else was to be expected from a film as badly expired as this one? I still have 4 rolls from this batch and I am not really sure what do with them yet. Expose as ISO12 next time? Or better not bother with this at all? I haven’t decided yet.

My name is Bastian and I am your expert here when it comes to ultra wide angle lenses, super fast portrait lenses (ranging from a 50mm f/0.95 to a 200mm f/1.8) and I also have reviewed way too many 35mm lenses. Don't ask me anything about macro or wildlife shooting though.

  1. Some photos actually look interesting this way, but I get the frustration. Perhaps it can be used with conversion to b&w in mind (now if that makes sense or not to some people, that’s another question). At suggested low ISO it would at least allow you to use very fast lenses in broad daylight on any camera (not that you don’t have ND filters anyway…).
I don’t know, there must be some positive, but I always have in mind that developing and scanning cost (at least) the same as always, no matter how trashy the film is.

  2. Oh man! the Canon 50mm 1.4 LTM is one of my favorites. I already know from experience that it’s not nearly as sharp as even 1960s SLR lens, but I love the rendering on it so much.

I can’t wait to see a review on it!

  3. If fog level is high, and contrast is low, perhaps try push processing (to raise contrast levels), with approximately “normal” exposure (nominal E.I.), or maybe no more than 1-stop more than nominal, as exposure compromise (between having enough exposure to overide age-caused fog, vs. having negatives too dense to scan well)?

  4. I somehow like those photos. They remind me of some photoshop templates that are offered by wedding photographers 🙂
