Analogue Adventures Part 42: A wedding with Eastman Double-X 200

Kodak Eastman Double-X 200

Some of you may remember the last time I shot Kodak Double-X, which was completely mouldy and gave very interesting results. I had another roll and kept thinking what I could possibly do with it. When a friend got married I decided that it was the right opportunity to get this film out and create some special pictures with it.
Processing and scanning was done at urbanfilmlab in Germany, the pictures in this article are from one roll of film which was exposed as ISO 125.

When I received the scans I was greatly surprised to find out this film was not mouldy but actually in pretty good condition. I did not expect this at all and I still don’t know if I am happy about that or not, as I was actually looking for that unpredictable results this time.

At some point I noticed my F80 was set to M instead of A, which must have happend when getting it out of my camera bag, and the whole wedding I had no idea how many shots were affected. Luckily they all came out without major issues in terms of exposure.

My name is Bastian and I am your expert here when it comes to ultra wide angle lenses, super fast portrait lenses (ranging from a 50mm f/0.95 to a 200mm f/1.8) and I also have reviewed way too many 35mm lenses. Don't ask me anything about macro or wildlife shooting though.

  1. Pity you did not get the interesting results as with the previous roll. 🙂
This roll shows it must have been very expired and/or stored in bad conditions. I bet there is very strong(dense) base fog. Fresh (or properly stored) Double-X gives beautiful results.

  2. Wasn’t the Eastman Double X film “Processed in D-96/Standard B&W Chemistry” not in C-41 chromogenic color print film chemistry?

  3. The film is very expired based on the looks. My old 35mm double-x scans look significantly better in every way. A pity the film is no longer available in regular 35mm rolls, but apparently you can buy it as movie roll film length. Perhaps it is worth it to find some fresh double-x to try out.
