In late 2010 Nikon released this Nikon AF-S 35mm 1.4G to give Nikon shooters their first faster-than-f/2.0 35mm autofocus lens – something they have long been waiting for. When I was using Nikon DSLRs I had the 24mm 1.4G and the 85mm 1.4G and couldn’t afford to get this 35mm as well, so it ended up being the only lens of Nikon’s higher end AF-S f/1.4 lineup I never used. Now is the time to finally change that.
In early 2021 Sony released three compact fullframe E-mount lenses and this Sony FE 50mm 2.5 G is the longest of those. While many of the competitors often cut corners with their compact lenses when it comes to build quality, feature set and sometimes also optical quality, Sony decided to go for a different approach here, offering more, but also at a higher price point. Classic rangefinder lenses usually spot less staggering minimum focus distances compared to (D)SLR and the latest lenses for mirrorless cameras because of how focusing with rangefinder cameras works. In 2022 several manufacturers are offering close focus adapters. These adapters have their own additional helicoid which allows you to focus your lenses much closer than you could with a conventional adapter. I have used several of these myself, so let’s see which ones are worth the asking price.
